He was born and raised in D.C., he had to leave for a few tours but outside of that nothing would make him leave. Everybody packed close together downtown killing each other might be an exception, least it would be if he was home when the world ended. He's never even been south of Virginia and yet he's crossing the whole South, the wet heat might be like nothing he's ever experienced but he's got to find his wife
Ira's leaving Atlanta when he literally runs into the biggest group he's seen in years. But bigger's not necessarily better, he gets a refresher on that less than 12 hrs later when one of his new friends shoots some blonde kid with a cast in the head in front of another new group. He's moving north with a group now and he's getting way more attached than he ever expected. They're a family like nothing he's encountered since all this started
And now he's lost them. He was closer to D.C. than ever, they were settled in not too far out. He'd arranged it with their new leader, Deana, so he could go out on runs and try to search the area. Coming back from his longest and most recent search, and it looks like Rick's back in charge and the community's not shitting on them anymore. But while working to redirect a horde, he ends up being the only survivor of his specific team and after a week he just passes clean out. Ira wakes up on some type of makeshift gurney and if the waves crashing a few feet away are any indication, hundreds of miles away
