She thought she had it good in Mexicali after hearing all the stories about California falling, but after getting in some mess with a weak motorcycle club and the two plane crash survivors Devon and Alexis who wandered into the middle of the powder keg after washing up on shore, it's too hot even for Berry. The sun beating down on her and this man she just met as they try to survive their way through the desert after a firefight with the Ottos and their white supremacist, backwoods militia definitely rivaled that moment before she was driven out of the community she built though. While dragging themselves out of there, they share failures they never said out loud; it's only been a few months since the world went to shit and their people needed them, but he doesn't know how to lead and keep everybody safe any better than she does. Taqa makes room for her in his own community when they finally make it out of there, but it's not long enough before the Ottos are popping up again and when the biological weapon she cooks up to combat them makes her realize monsters are not fit to lead anybody, it doesn't matter how much it feels like it makes sense just being there with him after everything. By the time she's done wandering and looking for the unknown, all that's left is a battlefield when she gets back, no Black Hat reservation, no Ottos. But Berry's not leaving again, it takes a few more months before she's back "home," and Taqa's finding her while the Proctors are trying to destroy her and everything she built.
A LITTLE EXTRA : Just some background -- October's a vet and she does have some combat medic training but she's no doctor or CDC researcher and her cooking up the Anthrax plan doesn't really have anything to do with any medical expertise
Her empire al Bazar was never really clean, it was built on some bodies and that never really balanced out all the lives she saved when she restarted civilization for a minute so before the Proctors came with their hostile takeover she was already feeling pretty empty, hopeless, disillusioned
