Maybe it's because he's older than most of them, or maybe it's because his people and their faith in him made a paragon of virtue out of him, but he can't go along with them. While he acts like he's sticking with them just to set them up, he finds out he can't go against Technical Boy, Media and Mr. World neither. He finds out the hard way; bound and brutalized for what feels like a eternity. Until She comes and joins the fold, better than one of their own could, playing them better than he ever could too. There's no hope of measuring up or even comparing by the time she breaks what's left of his ass out. He doesn't know if he was anything before people believed in him, but he knows he's not Super like he was before They had him.

this fic might get pretty dark so Bilquis and Clark are just gentle, slow and real emotionally deep for a grip -- the nasty shit they get up to while getting back at the new gods helps him heal too though

The specifics of Superman are up to you, he can be a modern day god since he has plenty of fans ready to believe comics and his story over reality -- he can represent how fans today choose imagination over reality-- or he can be more like a modern titan/legend
If you want even more from his story, then he could've been a old god before he died by his people and their faith in him fading out over generations or by some apocalypse, some more powerful god could've cursed him and he got magically reincarnated into this new form not too different from his old one at just the right time, or he could be more deceptive than he looks and evolved into this on his own
