China Anne McClain as Dolores Batiste
-AND-
Agape Mngomezulu as Jeo Batiste
Once you're in it's impossible to get out everybody knew that, so it's a shame she didn't find him a wreck and introduce him to her family months ago before he joined up with los Guerras. Ever since they did meet and she pulled him up, they've been alternating saves -- his cocky, green self uses his new position with the cartel to rescue her from problems at the border, she rescues him when he gets in over his head with some fucked orders from Carmen's father, he shows up when she calls in the middle of the night in trouble with los Guerras. When she finally tells him about her and her family's other lives, after months of her parents letting him come by for breakfast but keeping him at a distance because they're aware of his other life, she sees his eyes light up; suddenly he wants out.
He likes seeing Dolores happy. Ever since her parents adopted him, he's wanted to be just like her and seeing her care about somebody like she does Marcos gives him hope for when he finally comes into his own with his powers. But at the same time, he knows Marcos is wrong for her. He's a liability, and his misplaced priorities are about to ruin their family and everything they've built. He can't understand why she'd take a risk like Marcos for. Until he sees him again years later, and meets the guy whose family Marcos's rescuing.
A LITTLE EXTRA : So the premise of The Gifted was about these post X-Men era mutants acting as coyotes for hunted mutants basically along the eastern seaboard but we aint really seeing that no more so here's the Batistes, they're a more pan-american version and they're regularly at odds with a variety of shady organizations from semi-legal to illegal
The Batistes seen some shit and they're all trying to stay positive o varying degrees of success, since Dolores's been in it her whole life sometimes the rest of the family sees her as a big question mark and she can feel it, how they wonder if she's about to go a different way especially since she wasn't a saint with her powers when she first started out
And yes the Batistes are very similar to the Pierces, this was supposed to be a Black Lightning/Gifted crossover but DC/MCU crossover sounds like too much of a mind fuck for my rookie ass -- anyways the Batistes are super they all got powers they can be carbon copies of the Pierces b/c they're amazing, or they could have 5 kids and be semi-retired X-Men, they also care a lot about Marcos even when they don't trust him
Marcos was pretty different back then and The Gifted doesn't show nearly enough of that, ofc you can extend it into S1 and past that, but pre S1 with younger Marcos and his chaotic life regularly intersecting with somebody outside the cartel, somebody who inspires him, is a important part of their story
Side note I'm fucking in love with Jennifer/China for looking like the Phoenix we deserve
*UPDATE : after watching the new Twilight Zone I added another Batiste, he's Dolores's baby brother and they're super close sharing everything and him and Andrew have a pretty slow-burn thing going on once the story catches up to the series
and Jeo's pretty different from her far as his mindset goes and how he views his powers b/c his early years were different before he met the Batistes -- he's not necessarily more stable than her b/c he's still training and developing his abilities but he has a mature outlook
ofc Jeo's still naive in a few ways he doesn't really understand love or taking risks like his sister/s are and ofc you decide on his originstory
