Deaton did a few more tests, most of which brought us no closer to understanding what this was than when we first got here. And Tracy wasn't even batting an eyelash, so the three of us drifted off to our own little circle of conversation while we waited.
It was nearly sunset by the time Deaton mumbled, "Now this is interesting." Malia walked over to him, but Scott's phone buzzed, so I stayed to see what was going on, as did Stiles.
"It's my mom," Scott said, reading the text. "It's about the driver of the prison transport. She's saying he's awake and talking."
"Okay, well, what's he saying?" I asked, crossing my arms. Deaton asked Malia to help him turn Tracy over, and Stiles glanced at them.
Scott turned the phone so we could all see it. "Driver didn't have stroke or heart attack. Says it was more like his body just locked up."
"Like he was paralyzed," Stiles sighed.
"That sounds uncomfortably familiar," I grumbled. "I think I know what she is." Stiles looked at me like he was thinking the same thing, and Scott had a concerned look on his face.
"Care to enlighten the rest of us? Because this doesn't look too good," Deaton admitted. I walked over to see he had the back of Tracy's shirt pulled up to her shoulders. It looked like her spine was moving on its own in a slithering motion. It only further proved my Kanima suspicion. Deaton's expression held a mixture of disgust and horror as he watched the thing move under her skin. He poked at it gently, and each time it slipped away from his touch.
I leaned forward to look closer, and her back split completely open like it had been cut pristinely. It was so deep and wide that I could see her entire spine. Black blood squirted out, covering Deaton, Scott, and me in a spray of black. I coughed at the bit that had gotten in my mouth, backing up into Stiles on accident. He steadied me, and I stared at the spine moving in her back. I didn't think he was her spine anymore.
It raised slowly from the parted skin, then the entire tail sprang into the air. It hit Stiles first, then Deaton. Tracy jumped to her hands and feet, shrieking as she whirled around. Her tail struck us all one by one, but in the blink of an eye.
I dropped to the floor between Scott and Stiles, already feeling my body paralyze. I sat up as best I could, watching Tracy jump to the floor. She growled in a hissing way, the skin of her face held patches of snake skin. She looked at each of us then jumped for the exit.
I watched her pass over the line of ash effortlessly and unaffected, the wind she caused breaking it. I had no idea how she was able to pass over the line, but it was becoming a non-issue at the moment as I sank back to the ground, unable to move a single muscle in my body.
"It wasn't a werewolf!" Stiles yelled through his pants. He was flat on his stomach, his head facing the direction of the door.
"I hate Kanimas," I grumbled, sounding like someone who was mad about losing a board game. "How the hell did she get through the Mountain Ash?"
"I don't know. It's a barrier no supernatural creature should be able to cross," Deaton replied, amazingly able to sound calm even in this state. I focused my energies in forcing the toxin out of my body. Before I fell completely paralyzed, I slid out my claws, digging them into my thigh to start the healing process.
"Scott did it," Stiles retorted.
"Once, but it almost killed me," Scott reminded.
"Well, it looked pretty effortless for Tracy," I said, wincing as my claws dug through my skin.
