I quickly rushed out of the back seat as Malia pulled to a stop in front of the water plant. It was just as I remembered, but a little more run-down. A little more dangerous. I walked by Scott's side, having to double-time my steps to keep up with his strides.
I listened for a second, tuning out the three people with me. "I hear heartbeats. Go down." Scott turned instantly, taking the nearest stairwell all the way down. There were large pipes running along the walls, few lights, and it was a little wet. "Left."
Scott took a left next to me, Malia and Mason still behind us. When we turned another corner, there was a blue light shining through at the end of the tunnel. Scott and I looked at each other, silently asking if this was a good idea. It didn't matter it if was or not. It was Liam's life on the line. I would've run into any situation blindly if it meant saving him.
Mason came up on the other side of me when Scott and I stopped to listen and feel. Malia shouted Liam's name, and it echoed through the small corridor. I winced, my ears not prepared for the loud sound.
"Can you catch a scent?" Mason asked.
"There's too many chemicals," Scott sighed.
"I can't hear anything anymore. It's too closed in. Sounds are coming from everywhere," I complained.
"Then this might take a while," Mason said, helpfully. My eyebrows jerked up once in silent agreement that also said I was not looking forward to the search.
My pace turned to a jog the longer we searched, my anxiety spiking inside. Scott had to jog, too, to keep up with me. Scott called Hayden's name and I called Liam's.
Malia called a name too, but her voice sounded far away. Scott and I switched names, our voices bouncing off the walls. We turned a corner and bumped smack into Malia.
"Anything?" I asked.
"Nothing," she responded. We continued walking, Malia turning to walk with us. From somewhere behind, Mason's voice yelled Hayden's name, but he wasn't directly behind us, which is where he should've been. We couldn't protect him if we didn't know where he was.
Mason ran past, stopped when he found us. I sighed with relief at not having to run off to find his ass.
"Okay, we need to make sure that we're not covering the same area," Scott panted. He sounded like he was having an asthma attack, but I'd seen him run faster and longer than that and be perfectly fine.
"You need your inhaler, don't you?" Mason said. Scott looked like the idea confused him, but I knew what was going on. He was having a panic attack disguised as an asthma attack because he knew every minute we didn't find Liam and Hayden was another minute closer to their deaths, if they're not already dead.
I couldn't think about that because then I would be the one having a panic attack. So I did something my parents taught me. A werecat thing. I compartmentalized all my emotions and shoved the ones under my bed that would hinder my ability to find Liam.
"SH!" I said immediately, my ears perking as I heard something. "I hear something..."
"It's just the lights, isn't it?" Malia asked. Scott watched me with intensity, ready to believe any word that came out of my mouth. There was an electrical buzzing, but it wasn't the same as lights. Maybe somewhere down there, it could've been a heavy duty light, but I had to check.
"Follow me," I said, jogging in the direction of the sound. After a few minutes, I wasn't quite sure the sound I heard was the sound I followed. I slowed to a stop, looking around. My breathing was still even, but I couldn't say the same for Scott and Mason.
