There was an accident at the Sheriff's office, and not surprisingly, Lydia ended up getting hurt again. Sebastian stabbed her in the throat with his claws, and Sheriff rushed her to the emergency room. Naturally, the four of us rushed to the hospital to make sure that she was okay.
Liam decided to wait in the waiting room while the three of us went to her room. Lydia had a bloodied gauze patch taped on the left side of her neck. Her red hair was fanned out on the pillow, her hands folded neatly on top of her stomach. She was hooked up to an IV and sleeping soundly.
I walked to her bedside and took her hand, and Stiles stood to my right, holding my hand tightly. I wondered who it was for: me or him? Lydia's eyes fluttered open, her hand closing around mine. She grunted quietly, probably in pain.
"Hey, are you alright?" I asked, distracting her so I could take some of her pain without her noticing. The black veins slid up my arm and Stiles smiled lightly at me.
"Did... Did you find something? A solution?" she forced out, her voice acting like it didn't want to work.
"Yeah, we did. It's you. You're the solution, Lyds," I said gently. She blinked and it was clear that she hated that answer. I hated that it had to be her. "I'll get you some water, okay?" She nodded, so I gestured for Scott to follow me.
Once we were out of earshot and walking back to Liam, I said, "This is bad news."
"Yeah. I know," Scott replied. Liam glanced up at us, his mouth hanging open slightly.
"Is she okay?"
"She's gunna be fine, but..." Scott trailed off, glancing over at me.
With a sigh through my nose, I finished, "She can't really talk."
As expected, Liam's eyes started to water. "Then it's over, isn't it?" Neither of us answered, and he let out a cynical laugh. "There's nothing we can do to save him."
Scott's phone vibrated, and I peeked at it to see Kira left him two voicemails. He walked away to attend to that, so I sat down next to Liam, wrapping my arm around him. He pursed his lips and turned into my hug, letting me comfort him in silence. The real reason I wasn't talking was so I could listen in on Scott's messages.
"Hey," Kira sighed. "It's me. Oh, god, I wish you picked up. I hate leaving messages. I always ramble, I always say stupid things and when I finally get to the super important thing that I'm supposed to say, the voice message cuts me off and-." The beep indicated that her time had run up, and I smiled lightly. Scott pressed play on the next message. "Me again. I have to leave. But I'm coming back to help. I promise. Because you're right, Scott. If anyone's going to save Mason, it's you and Y/N. It's us."
Scott walked back to us with a smile on his face. "Get up, guys."
"Why?" Liam snipped, his head still resting on my shoulder self-piteously.
"Because I've got an idea. And because this isn't over."
I grinned and stood up, jostling Liam in the process. "Hell yes." Scott smiled at my enthusiasm, and I pulled Liam up by his hand. "Lead the way." Scott turned, directing us back to Lydia's room. I grabbed a Styrofoam cup of iced water that was sitting on a trey on the way to give to Lydia. It was full so I was assuming it was also unused. However, whoever it belonged to wasn't going to be happy with me for stealing it.
"Can you sit up?" Scott asked after Lydia took a large drink of the water. She grabbed the hands of Scott and Liam on either side of her, and they helped her sit up while I steadied my hand on her back. Stiles, who'd gone to get Melissa, walked into the room, closing the door quietly behind them as not to arouse suspicion.
