A text from Liam got me on my feet and at the clinic in minutes. He quickly pulled me into the back where Hayden was dying on the metal table, an IV connected to her. Melissa was there smoothing her hair down. I instantly went to her side, taking her hand. Scott wasn't here. My immediate thought was 'thank god' because I was a little mad at him for what he did to Stiles, but my second thought was 'why'. Liam was his beta. Shouldn't he be here for him?
"Hey," I said with a small smile that would trick Hayden into believing everything was fine. Her arms were littered with silver-ish bruises, so I kept my touch light. "How are you doing?"
"I'm okay," she replied.
"No, she's not," Liam blurted. I got the feeling that he asked me here for a reason. "It's on her neck, too." He was referring to her bruises, moving her hair out of the way to show me. Oddly enough, it looked like the bruises were in the patterning of a cheetah. "You have to do something." His tone and eyes begged me.
"Anything. What does she need?" I asked.
"Turn her."
His words made me freeze in my spot, doubt running through my mind. "Liam, I-."
"No! No excuses, just turn her." I smiled down at Hayden before releasing her hand. I grabbed Liam's wrist, dragging him into a different room. He looked at me with his arms crossed in anger.
"Listen to me. Turning her is dangerous."
"Yeah, Scott already said that."
"No, I mean it's dangerous. Why do you think I'm the only werecat you've ever met?" I stopped to give Liam some time to think about it. "A born werecat is rare, but a bitten? That's even rarer. Do you know why? They all die before they could turn. A werecat bite is different from a wolf's. It involves a kind of venom that I've never tapped into. If I give her too much or too little, she could die."
"She's already dying," Liam said stubbornly.
"Stop for a second. Listen to what I'm telling you. I could kill her." If I accidentally killed her, what would that do to me? I was scared to find out.
"I gotta get her to a hospital!" Melissa called from the other room.
"Please. She's dead if we don't do something. The least you could do is give her a chance." Fear ate at my heart at the prospect of tapping into my venom for creating a beta. Technically, in the werecat world, they're known as submissives, but I'd gotten used to the term beta. It didn't seem so scary.
"I'm sorry, Liam," I said, the fear of the unknown winning. "I can't." I couldn't look at his look of anger and sadness as I walked out the door.
It wasn't like I meant for it to happen, but I suppose my body naturally found its way to Stiles. I knew he probably wouldn't want to see me, and that fact hurt. A lot. But he wasn't alone. He was talking to Theo, and it seemed like I had come at the beginning of the conversation. I hid behind some cars, waiting to see what was being said before I did anything.
Theo was holding up Stiles' keycard, and Stiles stared at it in horror. I'm guessing that meant that he trashed it somewhere, because he didn't look happy to see it. "Your dad was looking for you, Stiles. He found me instead." Theo took steps away, and Stiles followed, listening to his words.
"Where is he?" Stiles asked. Theo chuckled, looking down at the keycard.
Theo looked back at Stiles like he was the bad one here. "I covered for you. This was taken care of. If Melissa didn't find it in the hospital trash can... I guess even the son of a cop can make mistakes." I frowned at Theo's tone.
