I rolled my eyes yet again as Theo declared his innocence. It was difficult to see his facial expressions on the monitor of the Sheriff station, but I figured he was lying anyway. When Sheriff brought him and two other teenagers named Jiang and Tierney in for murder, he'd called us down quickly. They were all Weres, that much was sure, but I didn't know who they were or where they'd come from. The two were uncomfortably calm with being accused of murder and trapped in a cell, and it put a bad taste in my mouth.
"Who did you kill? Was it you?" Theo asked Tierney lying on the bench. The boy Jiang, who was sitting on the floor next to her looked up at Theo quietly. "Was it you? Both of you? Who's the murderer?" Neither of them said anything, but they stared at him with secretive eyes. "Alright, I get it. The longer you stay quiet, the better, right?" Jiang lowered his gaze to the ground, wringing his hands nervously. Playing on that weakness, Theo crouched in front of him, staring him right in the face. "But you're here for murder. And they're keeping me here, too. But you're the murderers."
"We're not murderers," Jiang blurted. Tierney said his name in warning, her hand on his shoulder. "If you'd been there, you'd know we didn't have a choice. They came after us."
Tierney sat up, still pinching his shoulder. "Jiang, shut up!"
I sighed, walking away from the monitor as Theo smiled victoriously, asking to be let out now that he'd proven his innocence. It's not like I wanted someone to be murdered, but if there was a murderer, I would've expected (hoped) it would be Theo so we'd have an excuse to put him in prison. My fingers glided through my hair as I tried to think about what to do. If the kids had no choice, they would normally be let off the hook, but because they're Weres, I was thinking that hook might be a little harder to miss these days.
Parrish left to go let Theo out while I turned back to Sheriff, sliding in between Scot and Stiles. Malia, Lydia, and Liam filled in on either side, Liam next to Stiles. "They said they had no choice," I said.
Sheriff slapped down a file with their photos on the desk in front of me. "I'm not letting them out. We've got two bodies covered in slash marks. They confessed to killing two people."
"Hunters," Scott corrected.
"People, Scott. Self-defense or not, they're still here, the other guys are dead."
"The other guys that tried to kill them, Dad," Stiles said.
Sheriff frowned deeply. "Stiles, you know that there's a process I have to follow."
"Yeah, but you know what's happening around here," I defended. "It's not safe for them."
"This may actually be the safest place for them in Beacon Hills," Sheriff said, his voice rising in frustration. I didn't think he was right. There was a rat somewhere within the judicial system, and as much as I wanted to believe differently, I was sure there was one here. "At least I can protect them here."
Stiles refrained from rolling his eyes at his dad. "Or we can get them out of Beacon Hills. Dad, if one of your deputies is working for Gerard, this place is probably the most un-safe place for them in Beacon Hills."
Sheriff shook his head stubbornly. "I'm not buying that. I know these deputies like the back of my hand. I know their families, their kids, their brothers and sisters. I know who they are and I trust them."
"You know who they were," Liam blurted, shocking me. His strength of character was shining through more and more, and I was proud of him. "There's something out there. Everyone's afraid and it's getting worse."
"You can't protect two werewolves from hunters if they're already on the inside," Lydia said. Sheriff's eyes passed over all of us, his brain working to come up with his own decision. Finally, he looked over to the girl Scott brought from the house. She was cleaned up now. "It's Quinn, right?" She nodded shyly. "You're sure it was a deputy who shot you? Absolutely, 100% sure?" Again, she nodded, and Sheriff let out a loud sigh, his decision now much harder than before. "Okay, what did you see?"
