When Liam asked me what he was supposed to do right before we dropped him off, I didn't know what to say to him. What could we do? Nothing. So I said, "Just go to school, be normal. Pretend everything is fine." I couldn't keep his worried expression out of my mind, even as I took a look at Scott's wound. We were both clean, each having taken a short shower first.
Scott winced, and I pulled up a chair in front of him. His skin was shredded to bits. Whatever had gone into his body had done a ton of damage.
"It's deep, Scotty. You okay? Feel any pain?" I assessed what tools I'd need, and since he wasn't healing, I was pretty sure I was going to have to preform minor surgery and close him up.
"I'm okay," he breathed, sweat dripping down his face and neck.
"Liar," I muttered. He chuckled then winced at the pain. "Sorry. I don't see any black blood, so I don't think you've been poisoned. But you're not healing. I think I'm gunna have to sew you up. Do you have a needle?"
"In the first-aid kit in the cabinet under the sink." Scott laid back onto his bed while I searched through his bathroom cabinets. I found the white box with gauze, a curved needle, alcohol swabs, thread, and more. I brought the whole box with me, setting it on the bed next to him. I got a towel and pushed it under his body.
He gave me a funny look and I shrugged, "Just in case." That didn't give him much comfort. In fact, he looked hesitant about letting me near him with a needle. I grabbed a packaged needle that Melissa probably stole from the hospital and threaded it with the surgical string.
Scott held it for me while I gently wiped his wound with the alcohol swab. I took a deep breath and started the first suture. He took it well, only wincing at the pinch of the needle, and I felt confident in my abilities to do this correctly. Maybe it wouldn't be the best suture, but it would do the trick. He'd heal eventually anyway.
I never said a word as I worked, making sure it looked decent, and Scott picked up on my anxiety. "Are you alright?"
My eyes flicked to his for a millisecond. "Yeah."
"You haven't said much since the tunnels."
"Just thinking."
"About what Liam said?" I nodded but didn't respond. "What was that about?"
I pursed my lips, not meeting his eyes. "I did something stupid and I think it's going to get us all into a lot of trouble."
"What happened?"
Shame made red creep up my neck and I refused to look at anything but his ugly wound. "I fell right into Gerard's trap. He and Monroe were hunting us. They were using emitters and fog and I just thought... I thought if I could get Brett and Lori out of the tunnels, I could get them to safety. You know? I was trying to protect them, but all I did was put them right where Gerard wanted them." I finished up the final stitch with tears in my eyes and proceeded to tape a gauze patch over it. "I pushed them out of the way before they got hit by a car. I was hurt so Liam...he jumped up and we got angry and-." I stopped for a second to breathe and Scott sat up, watching me with kind eyes. "-and we shifted in front of them. People who were driving, walking, or coming out of their house saw us as animals and they were scared."
Scott took my hand after I finished throwing everything into the box and closing it angrily. "It's okay."
"No, it's not! It's happening. People are afraid of us and I made it worse."
"You didn't know."
"My parents knew. And we knew they were already scared. You didn't see the look in their eyes... They hate us." I hung my head, trying to hide the tears that spilled down my cheeks. Scott wrapped me into a comforting hug and let me cry against him. "I just... I'm sorry, Scotty."
