Scott dug through the pockets of a guard before grabbing his walkie while Liam and I tried to find a weak spot in the Ash.
"Anyone have eyes on Closed Unit? I need a status report," Scott said.
"It's a war zone down here," a guard replied, grabbing my attention.
"Uh..." Scott said. I mouthed '10-4' to him. "10-4. And what about the patients? Lydia Martin?"
"Who is this?" the voice answered, but it was colder now.
Scott shrugged. "It's Unit Nine." Scott rolled his eyes when the guard started asking more questions and squished the walkie in his hand until it was a crumpled bit of metal and plastic. It clattered to the floor.
"Okay. We need to figure out another way to get into this Closed Unit," I said, looking over my shoulder at the door we couldn't get through.
"How do we get through the Mountain Ash?" Liam sighed.
"I don't know yet. But there's somebody else here that might be able to help us."
"Who?" Scott asked.
"Meredith." As soon as I said her name, Scott's face lit up with understanding. We quickly made our way towards where we knew Meredith's cell to be. It was strange to think of it as a cell, considering this was a hospital of sorts, but it was very clearly not a room.
She was in the same kind of cell the other guy had been in. It was clear and there were holes going long the center horizontally. Inside there was a bed, a small toilet, and a sink. I wasn't sure how we were able to do so, but we opened the door and quickly filed in, and Liam closed it behind us. Meredith was sitting in a chair near her bed, but her back was to us.
Scott said Meredith's name, but she didn't answer. In fact, she didn't even move. So he tried again after giving me a confused look. "Meredith, it's Scott and Y/N." Again, she made no sign that she even knew we were in the room with her. Scott frowned at me, then gestured for me to check her.
"What? No, you check her!" I whispered back. I didn't know why I was whispering, but it seemed like I needed to.
"No, you do it! You're the matriarch!"
"You're the alpha!"
"You're the co-alpha!"
"Fine!" I hissed childishly. "You owe me." I took tentative steps toward Meredith, and because she was facing the wall, it made this so much creepier. I reached out and pushed the edge of her chair. I backed up into Liam, trying to move out of the way while the chair squeaked ominously. Meredith wasn't blinking, but she was alive, her eyes wider than I'd ever seen them. Which was saying something because Meredith was a bit bug-eyed to begin with.
I frowned at the sight of her, standing up straighter so I wasn't leaning back on Liam like a scared cat anymore. "Somehow... I don't think she'll be much help."
"No. Let's try to wake her up," Scott said as he knelt down next to her. Oh right. Now that he knew she wasn't gunna go crazy on him, he would go near her. Baby. Scott took her hand in his, rubbing it softly. "Hey, Meredith. Can you hear me? We need your help. We're trying to find Lydia. We're trying to get her out of here."
Liam looked out the window nervously, keeping an eye for orderlies and guards. "Guys, I thi-I think we better go."
Scott continued, "Meredith, listen. There has to be another way to get to Lydia. We can't get past the Mountain Ash. How do we find her?" Meredith didn't answer, and Scott pursed his lips.
