Scene 20 – No one saw through the mask

One year later…

Clara smiled as she looked at the cake she made for Kieran’s first birthday party, he’d like this. Feeling satisfied with the cake, she took her apron off and wore back her rings. She left the kitchen and went to the living room.

Aiden was there arranging the room with the balloons and all the rest. He was holding the birthday sign and frowning in concentration at it, he must’ve noticed she was standing by the doorway that he looked over his shoulder, “Hey, do you think Kieran would like this?”

She smiled at him, “Aiden honey, he’s one. He likes everything.”

Aiden nodded seemingly satisfied with her answer, “Is the cake done?”

“Yeah, the cupcakes are on the oven and mom is bringing the other foods.” Melanie had suggested that their chef would look for the grown up food for the party and Clara didn’t argue because she wasn’t much of a cook.

“Kieran!” Aiden called suddenly and Clara spun her head and saw Kieran walking toward them, she smiled at her son, when Kieran learned to walk, he was constantly at his feet roaming the house.

“Mimi!” Kieran said his arms going up excitedly and she walked over him and picked him up, he grinned at her, “Mimi, lion!” pointing at the stuffed lion.

She walked them toward the couch where the stuffed animals where; Aiden wanted it to be a zoo themed party and because it seemed that Kieran liked the idea too she relented.

She settled them on the couch and Kieran grabbed the lion, he made a sound of a lion and laughed, “Dada, wraaahhh.” Waving the lion.

Aiden went to them and sat beside them, he made a sound of a tiger as he took the stuffed tiger.

“Mimi, monkey!” pointing at the monkey.

Clara grabbed the monkey and waved it to Kieran’s face, he started laughing again and he copied her.

“Kieran.” Aiden called, Kieran looked at him and smiled, “Who do you love more, mommy or daddy?” he asked grinning at Kieran.

Kieran grinned at him and answered, “Mimi!”

Clara smiled and kissed Kieran on the cheek, she looked at Aiden who pouted at Kieran, Kieran always changed who he loved more, sometimes it was Aiden, sometimes Clara, it depended on his mood.

“Well, mommy loves daddy more.” Aiden said pulling Clara on his side and hugged her.

Kieran who was still in Clara’s lap and now sandwich between them pushed Aiden away and cried, his hands going to his eyes, “Mimi!” he cried.
