The bracelet was dangling down my finger, the little diamonds reflecting the sunlight to give off a beautiful sparkle. It was Christmas eve, and I had ordered this custom made piece of jewellery as a gift for my lovely Alice. Honestly, no diamonds or any other precious gemstones could match her worth in my life. Yet, I felt like showering her with all the possible material and immaterial expressions of love.

I heard the door creak, so I immediately put it back inside its tiny velvet box and then secured it inside my jacket pocket.

Alice entered the room, looking as beautiful as ever. I asked her to go home and rest last night, so she would be in a better state to pick me up that morning.

"How's the shoulder?" She asked.

I rolled it and then placed my right hand over it. "Never been better."

She turned to leave, but I grabbed her by the wrist and held her back. She glanced at me with a confused smile which was when I pulled her to me and hugged her tight. I breathed in her scent and let out a long breath of relief. I felt her hand gently graze up my back and pat me lightly.

Holding her like that in my arms felt like the best present life could ever offer to me. It was a torture not to be able to hold her for the last few days after that horrible night. No matter the number of times you see the person breathe before your eyes, nothing beats the relief of physical touch.

"Aahh, my little pet missed me, " she chuckled, and I grinned.

"You do know how dogs express their love, don't they?" I chuckled. "By licking and kissing!" I nuzzled and planted a kiss on the side of her neck.

"Kai!!"

We walked outside the hospital to the parking lot

We walked outside the hospital to the parking lot. There stood her father's Volkswagen, and I narrowed my eyes on her. I didn't remember returning the keys to her.

"What?" She shrugged. "You shouldn't have placed the keys in plain sight. I spotted them as soon as I opened your drawer."

She put the keys in the ignition and drove out. I gazed outside the window. It was cold, but it felt nice to experience the clean air after being cooped up inside that room. I closed my eyes and relished the feeling of the cold wind hitting my face. It is only in the moments of peace and serenity when you truly learn to appreciate the beautiful gifts of nature.
