"You could be my teacher, you could be my boss..."
Zoe sang quietly in a corner of the arcade, launching a miniature basketball into a hoop in front of her. PrettyMuch was playing overhead in the dimly lit building, neon signs flashing all around. Christopher and Zoe had snuck away on a date since everyone else was busy with their significant others. So far, he'd won her a bag of assorted candy and bought her a cinnamon sugar pretzel, which he ended up eating most of.
"Oh, you could be my lover, you could be my car..." Christopher whispered in her ear, squeezing the exposed strip of skin between her red crop top and her black jeans. "Having fun, mi amor?" He stole a ball from her pile, landing a tiny jump shot. Zoe leaned back against the machine, giving him a smile. "Do you want to get something to eat on the way back to the hotel?" He caressed her hips, pulling her flush against his body.
"Well, we ate on the way here..." She trailed off, pretending to think for a few moments. "So of course," Zoe giggled, sliding her hand up to his chest. Christopher chuckled, giving his head a tiny shake in exasperation. "Wanna play one more game before we go?" He grinned at her inquiry, tugging her in the opposite direction. They stopped in front of a claw machine, Christopher reaching into his pocket for a couple of tokens. "You love your claw machines," She mused, crossing her arms in amusement.
"Correction, I love winning stuff for mi niña." He bent his neck at an awkward angle, kissing her temple. Christopher slipped to coins into the slot, right hand hovering over the lever. Zoe watched his body language contently, not paying any attention what so ever to the game he was trying to win. "Yes!" His shout brought her back to reality, a stuffed purple owl being shoved into her palms. "Here you are, mi amor." Christopher grinned from ear to ear, clearly proud of his accomplishment. He made a quick Instagram post of himself holding out the owl, putting his phone away.
"Gracias, mi Vida. We can add it to the collection," Zoe snuggled the plush to her chest, standing on her toes to kiss Christopher's cheek. He had a thing for getting her an assortment of stuffed animals over the period of time they'd been around one another. It had started with a bear when she was sick, a few months before they even kissed. "I think it's my favorite one so far," She grinned cheesily, sliding her hand into his. Christopher led them out of the arcade with a smile, freezing just outside of the door. "What's wrong?"
"Put this on," Christopher blocked her sight, removing his bomber jacket and snapback. Zoe put them on without question, slightly confused as to why it was so urgent. That was until she heard the clicking of camera shudders, using Christopher's jacket to hide her face along with his hat. He formed a shield around her, back facing the cameras as he guided her into the rental car. "Shit, I should've known better than to post pictures while we were still here." Christopher started the car, his hand resting in the center on the gear shift. "Lo Siento, amor."
She rests her hand over his, interlacing their fingers. "Hey, it's okay. They didn't see my face," Zoe brought his hand up to her lips, kissing the back of his palm. Christopher gave her a quick squeeze when they were far away from the paparazzi, signaling that it was okay for her to look up. "And if they did we can handle it. Zabdiel would buy that we just got bored and went out for a little bit," He sighed, pulling the car into the Chipotle drive-thru.
"We were holding hands, amor. That doesn't look very friendly," He ordered their dinner, shooting her a look when she reached for her wallet. "But, you're right. We can handle it," Christopher passed her the paper bag of food, placing their shared drink in between them. Zoe divided up their spoils one-handed, feeding Christopher a nacho. "Gracias," He mumbled through a mouthful of cheesy goodness, her thumb wiping away the access in the corner of his lips. "I love you, Zobeida." Christopher stole a glance her way, finding her already looking at him with a tiny smile.
"I love you more, Christopher." Zoe smiled, resting her head back against the seat. They drove in comfortable silence, almost making it back to the venue before she spoke up once more. "Christopher?" He hummed, signaling that he was listening. "Can you promise me something?" Christopher now gave her his undivided attention, looking at Zoe as frequently as possible while still driving. She gnawed on the inside of her cheek, not quite sure if what she was asking was even fair. "You'll still love me after we tell Zabdiel. Even if it messes up the band,"
Christopher's response was automatic, he didn't even give himself time to consider the promise he was making. "I promise." He squeezed her hand, not taking his eyes off of the hotel in front of them that he'd just pulled up to. Zoe grabbed her purse off the floor beside her feet, preparing to see the others once again. Christopher spoke one last sentence before he got out of the car, not looking at her once. "Nothing can ever change the way I feel about you," She watched him retreat from the car with a sick feeling in her stomach, one thought swirling around in her head.
He didn't sound like he believed a single word he'd just said.
