"Little one, I've loved being pregnant, I have. But, I can't wait to have my body back,"
Zoe groaned, waddling out of the nursery. Her due date was now just four weeks away and she was heavily pregnant, with the swollen ankles to match. She was uncomfortable twenty-four-seven anymore, with a fully developed child bouncing around inside of her. Not to mention the baby smacked into her bladder every five seconds when Christopher came around. His voice riled up their daughter, which he found adorable. And she did too, atfirst. But for the past few hours, she'd been in immense pain that seemed to be getting worse.
Christopher looked up from his video game at the sound of her footsteps, his eyes instantly sparking with happiness at the sight of his girlfriend. "Eres bueno, amor?" You good, love? He caught the pained look in her eyes as she rounded the corner of the couch, giving him a weak smile. Her smile fell almost instantly when a sharp pain rocked through her lower left side, gasping in pain. "What is it?" Christopher had abandoned his game and was beside her in under two seconds flat, worriedly looking down at her.
"Something doesn't feel right, Christopher," She admitted, a hand pressed to the origin of pain. "I don't know what- fuck," Zoe swore loudly as her knees buckled, Christopher thankfully catching her with ease. His eyes racked over her body, safely placing her on the couch. "I think I need to go to the hospital," She cried, tears pricking the back of her eyes. He nodded furiously, bolting down the hallway to grab their pre-packed bag while dialing Zabdiel's number. Zoe squeezed her eyes shut, doing everything in her power to focus on her own breathing.
Zabdiel burst through the front door not even a minute after Christopher told him what was going on. "Que pasa?" What's wrong? He shouted, spotting his sister. "Pequeña," His eyes widened to the size of saucers, crouching down in front of Zoe. She had sweat dripping down the back of her neck, her breath coming out in short and harsh pants. "What can I do?" Zoe shook her head, unsure of what could possibly help her.
"Zabdiel, man, can you drive us?" Christopher handed Zabdiel the to-go bag they were sharing along with the keys. "Amor, I'm going to carry you, okay?" He slipped his arms under her frame, pulling her into his embrace with ease. After working out for the past few months he'd gotten a lot stronger for this specific scenario where she would need to be carried. "Just hold on, Princesa," Christopher spoke more to himself than to her as they exited the elevator, Zabdiel opening the back door for them.
He placed Zoe on the seat and strapped her in, closing the door as Zabdiel put the car in drive. "She can't come yet, Christopher. It's still too early," Zoe cried, Christopher glancing nervously at Zabdiel. He looked down in horror to find a small patch of blood soaking through her pants, Zoe not able to see it. Christopher made eye contact in the rearview mirror, relaying a silent message for Zabdiel to drive faster. "She has a month left," She clutched her side, the pain spreading out across her torso. "Guys, what if-" Christopher silenced her with a small peck, resting her sweating forehead against hers.
"It's going to be okay, alright?" Christopher reassured her, gently stroking her hair. Zoe had tears streaming down her face from a mixture of pain and terror, fisting the front of his shirt. "She's going to be just fine." He reassured not only her but himself, trying desperately to stay sane for the sake of her. But on the inside, he was screaming out a prayer for his daughter and the love of his life to be okay. "You're gonna be fine," She swallowed thickly, looking him straight in the eyes. "Zabdiel, when we get to the hospital can you please call Erick?"
Zoe felt a small twinge of gratitude surge through her as Christopher talked to Zabdiel. "I already texted him, he's on his way with Edith." Zabdiel whipped into the hospital parking lot, barely putting the car in park before running to get help. Christopher lifted her out of the vehicle, two nurses appearing beside him with a gurney. He sat her down on the contraption, not releasing her hand. They'd reached a set of double doors when a male nurse stopped Christopher by placing a hand on his chest. "Sir, you have to wait out here."
"You don't understand-" He started arguing, struggling in the man's grip as Zoe's hand was ripped from his. "Zobeida," Christopher struggled harder, Zabdiel locking his arms around him. "I love you!" Zoe locked eyes with him, seeing the panic enveloping him. She mouthed the words I love you, nodding gingerly at him that it was okay. He watched helplessly as she was wheeled down the hallway, the doors closing in his face. "I can't-"
Christopher's knees gave out, Zabdiel and Erick, who'd just arrived, holding him up. "I can't lose them," His bloody palms clawed desperately at Zabdiel and Erick, the boys dragging him into an abandoned room. "They have to be okay, tell me they're going to be okay!" Tears streamed down his face in steady waves, his chest heaving up and down. Erick and Zabdiel shared a look, holding their own tears at bay for the sake of their best friend. "Please," Zabdiel opened his mouth, trying to calm everyone down.
"They're gonna be okay, they have to be."
