I'd Follow You Anywhere

"Zobeida,"

Christopher stared into her eyes, taking a quick steadying breath. "I've loved you for close to two years now, and I'll never love anyone the way I love you." He spoke so softly that he was almost inaudible, but she was listening with such intensity that she didn't miss a single word he said. "You're everything to me and I know I haven't been the best at showing it. But, I swear to you that will change." Swallowing thickly, his voice wavered with nerves. "I want to love you for the rest of my life, and I have no doubts that I will." A small smile graced his lips, eyes flickering to her stomach for a fraction of a second.

"I want to give her a brother and sister," He stared at her bump, picturing their future in his head. "To grow old and gray with you in a home in Loja, or wherever you want to go. Because heaven knows, Zobeida, I'd follow you anywhere." Christopher chuckled lightly, knowing it was the most honest statement he'd ever spoken out loud. "I want to marry you, Zobeida Mariana De Jesus." Chewing on his bottom lip, he finally looked back up into her tearful eyes. "And I want to change your last name permanently. So, there's really only one question left."

"Mi amor, will you marry me?"

"Yes," Zoe spoke the second the question left his lips, her words flowing out like honey. "Yes, I'll marry you." Christopher froze with his lips parted, half of him honestly expecting her to say no. She gave a watery giggle at his shocked face, the melodic sound somewhat snapping him from his daze. "Well? Aren't you suppose to but the ring on me?" He looked between her left hand and the diamond ring in his tiny black box, fumbling unceremoniously for the piece of symbolic jewelry. Tears of happiness rolled down their faces as he slid the ring on her left hand, Christopher snapping the box shut and tossing it behind him.

"Christopher-"

Her gasp was cut off by his lips slamming eagerly onto hers, her right hand cupping the back of his neck. "You're serious, right?" Zoe inquired, murmuring against his mouth. He giggled, which was her favorite sound in the world, before nodding earnestly. "Good, because so am I." She toyed with the hair at the nape of his neck, glancing down at her left hand. Christopher followed her line of sight, admiring the image. "It's beautiful, when did you even have time to pick this out?" Zoe fell instantly in love with the vintage diamond.

"It was mi bisabuelas," Christopher smiled softly, remembering his late great grandmother. "Mama brought it when she visited last and gave it to me." He chuckled, thinking about how excited his mother had been to give him the ring. "She knew before I did," Zoe laughed lightly, amazed by how it was already a perfect fit. "I got it resized last week," Christopher read her mind before she could even ask. "I used your class ring as a reference," He was referring to the ruby ring she'd gotten in high school which she hadn't worn since graduating.

"Do you think everyone else can come back now?" Zoe rose her eyebrows, rather eager to break the news. Plus, she knew that she'd severely scared them, especially her brother. "Hm, it's been about an hour. I don't see why not," Christopher pushed himself off of the floor, pecking her lips once more. He picked up the jewelry box on his way past, turning around to grin at her. "Don't worry, I won't tell them without you,"

She grinned, watching him walk out the door with a spring in his step. Zoe swore she could've seen him skipping as the door fell closed behind him, something she wouldn't put past him. Nonetheless, the mere thought of it made her giggle. She ignored the faint headache she had over all the blood rushing to her head, focusing instead on the sound of echoing footsteps in the hallway. The door opened to reveal a widely grinning and somewhat teary-eyed group, Zoe giving Christopher a knowing glare.

"You told them already, didn't you?"

"I couldn't help it!"

Late last night the love of my life went into preterm labor with our baby girl and scared me half to death. Today, I have good news. A few hours after the doctors managed to stop her contractions, I asked Zoe to be my wife.

And she said yes!

Hmm, I guess I could use this month of bed rest to plan our wedding.

Oh, did I mention I'm engaged?

"Congratulations, sis,"

Zabdiel squeezed Zoe's hand, smiling kindly at her. "I'm really happy for you. Both of you," Zoe glanced down at the head laying on the side of her bed, fast asleep. Christopher had passed out around an hour ago and Zabdiel insisted on staying just for the night with the promise to go back home tomorrow. "Idiota," Zabdiel snorted, making fun of his sister's fiance. Zoe laughed quietly as to not disturb him, lazily running her fingers through his hair. Her heart melted when he smiled in his sleep, making her lips do the same.

"Gracias, Zab." Zoe returned his squeeze from earlier, neither of them releasing their limbs. "I'm sorry for scaring you last night, by the way."  She apologized, remembering the horror in his eyes when she was being wheeled away on a hospital bed. Zabdiel waved her off with his free hand, his gaze slowly wandering back to his phone where he'd been texting Kat. "On the bright side, now I get all this free time to plan a wedding." Unbeknownst to them, Christopher had cracked an eye open to observe their conversation.

"Can I help?"

"Honey, you do realize you're the groom, right?"

"Oh, yeah,"

"Oh Dios mio, my niece is doomed."
