"Zoe! Hola,"
Linda had quickly become her confidant.
Zoe learned that Linda had traveled the world as a photographer and was fluent in Spanish. So far, the tiny woman in her seventies was the only friend she had in Miami. They'd eaten lunch together every morning for the past two weeks, something that started after she'd caught Zoe one morning after a breakdown. Zoe had spilled everything to the old woman who felt sorta like a cool grandmother to her, including the pregnancy. It wasn't like she'd be able to hide it for too much longer anyway, she would begin to show eventually.
"Hola, Linda! I have to get to my ultrasound now, I managed to finally find a doctor." She smiled at the older woman, hoisting her purse onto her shoulder. "Can we post-pone lunch until tomorrow?" Linda waved the young girl off, telling her not to worry. "Gracias, I'll see you later." Zoe waved goodbye, sliding into the SUV she'd bought a few days ago. Sure, it wasn't her dream car, but she needed something safe and reliable for the baby.
Normally, during pregnancy, you only had two ultrasounds. But since Zoe had gotten so easily dehydrated they decided more frequent ultrasounds would be a good idea. So here she was, almost three months along, on her way to meet a brand new OB so she could get freezing jelly spilled on her stomach. It was all worth it in the end, after all, she would get to see a photo of her child. This baby had quickly become everything to her.
"I have an appointment for Dr. Smith?" Zoe spoke to the front desk, filling out a tiny stack of paperwork. It was a short wait before she was on an examination table with an ultrasound wand pressed against her skin. "Can I get some extra copies of the photos?" She inquired, wanting to send Erick and Edith an updated set. The nurse nodded, focused on the task at hand.
Zoe had spoken to Erick nearly every day since she left, and the girls off and on. They'd even FaceTimed once or twice, mostly so he could watch her while he yelled. But once he calmed down, their friendship went back to as normal as possible. He knew better than to mention Christopher and Zabdiel, so he stuck to talking about the baby.
Hell, she was currently sending him snaps in between watching the nurse. A small thudding sound filled the room, tears welling up in her eyes. It was their heartbeat, the most beautiful sound she'd ever heard in the world. She thought about asking about finding out the gender from labwork, but in a strange way, it didn't feel right to know. Not without Christopher there to share in the excitement too.
She recorded the faint thumping sound, sending it to Erick, Edith, and Jade. The four of them had a group chat that had become dedicated to the unborn child. "Oh, thank you." Zoe took the stack of photos, carefully sliding them into her purse so they wouldn't get damaged. "So I just pick up my prenatal's at the pharmacy right?" Her nurse nodded, hardly having spoken a word the entire time Zoe was there. "Alright, thanks, Iguess." She muttered, slipping out of the room. Zoe checked out from the front desk, finally breathing when she was out of the building.
Zoe was wandering through the closest pharmacy when her phone started ringing. "Hola, Pendejo." She answered the FaceTime call from Erick, sending him a faint smile. "Sorry if it's noisy, I'm picking up my prenatal vitamins- what's wrong?" Erick's eyes had widened significantly when she mentioned her vitamins. It was then that Joel poked his head out in front of the screen. "Of fucking course,"
"You're pregnant?" He directed his first question at Zoe, turning to who she assumed was Jade from off-camera. "She's pregnant?" Jade came into view, muttering her apologies. Zoe sighed deeply, grabbing the vitamins she'd just paid for and walking out to her car. "Zoe, why didn't you tell anyone?" Zoe gave Joel an are you fucking stupid look, the boy nodding in agreement with her facial expressions. "Sorry, I'm just surprised. How far along are you? You aren't showing in your photo,"
"Uh, eleven weeks. It just looks like I ate a big burrito right now," She chuckled, the rest of the group joining in. "That's why the purse was there," In her Instagram post, she had strategically placed her purse directly in front of her stomach. Zoe looked nowhere near pregnant, but fans could always make something out of nothing. "I guess Joel can join the group chat now, just please forwarn me if there's someone else there next time." She sent a short mock glare to Erick and Edith, pulling into the parking lot of her apartment. "How've you guys been? Richard and Aly?"
"We're good. Aaliyah has her first dance recital next week," Zoe beamed at Erick as he told her the news, her smile faltering when she realized she wouldn't be there to see it. Sensing her sorrow, Edith spoke up from her spot on Erick's lap. "We'll FaceTime you so you can watch," How's that gonna work when Chri- he's there. "Or just record it," Joel had caught the way her face fell, suggesting a better alternative. She gave Joel a weak smile on her way upstairs, locking her apartment door behind her.
"Gracias, Joelito," She tossed her bag on the bed, carefully removing her photos from it. Zoe had barely purchased anything for her home yet since she didn't have anyone to help her carry it. So far, she'd stocked her kitchen and got wifi so she could use the tv in her bedroom. "Now that I'm inside, I have a question." The four people on the other end perked up, all crammed into Erick and Edith's hotel room.
