As they finished their meals in silence, Soobin got up, "Since it's your birthday, let me pay."

"Oh no, hyung. It's fine," Kai protested uneasily.

Soobin put a hand on Kai's shoulder and said with a reassuring smile, "take it as a birthday present, yeah?"

While Soobin paid, Kai obediently waited, though he felt more uncomfortable as the "date" continued, he took a deep breath and told himself to enjoy what only time he'd probably ever have with Soobin alone.

As they got out of the café, Kai asked Soobin, "Hyung, want to catch a movie or something?"

"Movie?"

"Yeah"

"Are the guys waiting there?"

"Oh, I mean, I think they said something about them being unable to come after all," Kai lied, looking away and avoiding Soobin's disappointed gaze.

"That's not very nice of them, I mean, it's your birthday, they should be more considerate."

"Oh no, it's really fine though, hyung"

"I think I'm going to call Yeonjunnie up to ask him what all this is about"

Before Kai could say anything, Soobin whipped out his phone and called Yeonjun.

"Oh, Yeonjun-hyung is on his speed dial," Kai thought as he watched Soobin make the phone call.

"Hey Soobinnie!" Yeonjun picked up the call.

"Hyung, you guys aren't coming today?" Soobin asked with a sad pout.

"Why do you ask that?" Yeonjun sounded surprised.

"You guys cancelling on Kai? That's really not good"

"Is Kai right there?"

"Yeah, he's walking right next to me"

"Stray a bit farther away because I don't want him to hear this"

"Yeah, okay"

Watching Soobin put the distance between them, it felt as though nails had been pierced into Kai's heart, but he didn't question anything, he'd heard Yeonjun tell Soobin to do so.

"We're actually preparing a surprise birthday party for Kai, tonight, at Beomgyu's"

"Oh!"

Soobin was surprised.

"Yeah so just keep him distracted until we're done preparing, okay?"

"Okay, but be quick"

"Yeah, can't wait to see you. Bye!"

"Can't wait to see you either, bye," Soobin softly whispered, ending the call as light pink heat rose to his cheeks.

Seeing Soobin made Kai feel horrible as ever but he put his feelings aside and tried to appear indifferent, "What'd Yeonjun-hyung say, hyung?"

"Oh they just got caught up with something, but they'll be done by later in the evening so"

"Ah"

"So, we'll see them later," Soobin smiled big, eyes closed and dimples apparent.

"So, want to go catch a movie?"

"Sure."

As Soobin and Kai walked to the nearest theatre, deciding that ending the silence between them would be better, Soobin spoke up, "the pancakes were really good."

"Yeah, they were. Thank you, hyung," Kai couldn't help but internally celebrate at the fact that Soobin had at least tried to strike up conversation.

"The place was so cute too, the décor was everything," Soobin gushed.

"Haha, that was where I had my first-date with my first boyfriend," Kai mentally face palmed at the fact that of all things, he was talking about his ex to his crush.

"Oh," Soobin was slight taken aback.

"Yeah"

"An ex?"

"Yeah, he was in denial about being gay and even refused to call himself my boyfriend"

"Woah"

"I don't even know what I was doing with such a guy, really. I guess that's what they mean when they say that love makes one dumb"

"Love, huh?"

"Yeah, it was my own fault though. Beomgyu-hyung didn't even know we were a thing until after we broke up. But now that I look back at it, I really was the only one who thought we were dating."

"Ouch"

"Really. Apparently he was one of Beomgyu-hyung's acquaintances and Beomgyu-hyung saw him with a different girl every weekend. Beomgyu-hyung was surprised that he was even into guys when I first told him about it all"

Not knowing what to say, Soobin just nodded, with disbelief painting his face.

When Soobin said nothing, Kai glanced at him, "I'm sorry for boring you out with all that, hyung, I just sort of had to get that off my chest, he's been on my mind a lot lately."

"No, it's not boring" Soobin hurriedly said.

"Do you miss him?"

"I mean, I had it real bad for him, I was madly in love with that bastard," Kai said with a shudder.

"Is it nice?"

"What?

"Falling in love."

"I don't know. I guess it'd be if they loved you back too."
