After Yeonjun sang Happy Birthday to him in a sweet melodic voice, Soobin cut the cake with the plastic knife Yeonjun had with him as the older clapped happily.
"To Soobin's happiness!"
Soobin warmly smiled at the older who took a bite of the cake, flashing a thumbs up at the taste.
"A bite for my Binnie too!" Soobin leaned forward and opened his mouth as the older fed him a bite of the moist chocolate cake.
After they had both had a bit of cake, just cutting up bite-sized pieces here and there, picking it up with the knife and eating, Yeonjun put the cake aside, "That's enough for now."
"Thanks, Hyung. It was delicious."
Yeonjun smiled as he reached to ruffle the younger's hair lovingly.
"Maybe we should go in now, it's getting really cold."
"Right," Yeonjun agreed, walking back into the room, taking the used tissues to throw away. Soobin picked up the cake, giving the beautiful starlit sky a final lingering gaze before following the older in.
"Hyung, come here it's cold," Soobin beckoned to the older as he settled on his bed, making himself warm as he got under the covers.
Yeonjun settled in besides the younger and Soobin made sure to drape the duvet on the other to keep the older warm too.
"This is nice," Yeonjun let out a relaxed sigh.
Soobin glanced at the older besides him, "Yeah, nice and warm."
Soobin yawned, it was past midnight and he was usually asleep by this time of the night.
"Tired?"
"Yeah, Hyung. Let's sleep," Soobin lazily latched on the older besides him, bringing Yeonjun down with him as they both fell back on the bed, now laying down, Yeonjun in Soobin's arms.
"Isn't it uncomfy?" Yeonjun laughed as he carefully wriggled out of the younger's hold and turned to face him, laying down and putting his arm under the younger's head.
"This is better," Soobin softly commented as he snuggled in, Yeonjun wrapping his arms around his torso as he thanked how dark it was so the older wouldn't be able to notice the faint pink which was now adorning his face.
"Let's stay like this for a bit."
"Alright. Goodnight Binnie," Yeonjun tried not to cry and to sound as happy as he could for the younger.
"This is the last wish I'll be fulfilling, yours as well as mine," Yeonjun thought to himself, trying to hold back the tears which were threatening to spill from his eyes.
Soon, Soobin's soft even breathing could be heard, he was sound asleep. Yeonjun, on the other hand was as awake as ever, he looked at the younger's face below his, the younger looked at peace with his closed eyes and slightly curled up lips. A tear escaped Yeonjun's eyes, slipping off of his face and landing on the younger's cheek. Yeonjun reached out to wipe it off, he felt faint as he realized that his time with the younger was now coming to an end.
Yeonjun continued looking at younger, reminiscing about their time together, both as teens and as toddlers. Yeonjun felt grief, comfort, guilt, ease and at peace, all at once. But most of all, he felt love, love for the younger who was previously destined to be with him for longer, the younger who deserved so much, the younger he hadn't been able to protect, the younger he no longer deserved.
"I hope he'll be who I couldn't to you."
Yeonjun slowly leaned down to give the younger a chaste kiss of goodbye.
"I hope you'll find happiness with him."
And just as Yeonjun's lips were almost in contact with the younger's cheek, the last of him faded away, in tiny specs of light, leaving not a trace remaining. Yeonjun had now disappeared back to the heavens.
The next day as Soobin slowly woke up, his arm subconsciously reached for something- or someone besides him. When he felt nothing, no one, he sat up with a start, frantically looking around for something that felt well bygone. When he saw his old childhood teddy on the floor besides his bed, he felt slightly better, perhaps the teddy bear was what he seemed to be searching so wildly for. As he slowly reached for the teddy and sat back up straight in bed, he heard a knock on the door.
"Uhm yeah?"
"Soobin? Are you up? Can we come in?"
It was his mum.
"We? Uh yeah sure."
Then the door opened and in came his mother, stepdad, brothers as well as his three close friends.
"Happy Birthday Soobin!"
"Happy Birthday Soobin-hyung!"
Kai was carrying a small chocolate cake which had Soobin's name written on it in white icing, along with tiny flowers and hearts drawn around in the same white icing.
After Soobin had blown the candles and his family had left, his friends gave him birthday presents. Soobin was very happy, it was a first for him to have friends to celebrate his birthday with and he was very grateful for the three best friends he had who he had spent many happy times with. After Soobin received a birthday hug from each of them and then went downstairs to join Soobin's family for breakfast, what Soobin failed to notice was that the half eaten cake that had just need left on his bedside table was the same Yeonjun had bought for him, the night before.
