XXIII

As Soobin and Kai walked on, Soobin grew more and more upset as he realized his own social incompetence, how he was unable to hold conversations and how he wasn't someone enjoyable to be with.

Though Kai too, was down, he sighed to himself as he realized that he was making Soobin uncomfortable. So even though he himself was feeling as low as ever, he wanted at least Soobin to be smiling. Kai decided to try cheering Soobin up.

Wondering what he could do, Kai decided that even a nice talk could at least bring Soobin to ease and pondered upon what he could say as a conversation starter. Realizing that he didn't really know Soobin well enough to know what Soobin liked to talk about, Kai decided to simply, talk about the movie they had just watched. It wasn't unusual to be talking about the movie right after watching one either so it felt like a safe bet.

"How'd you like the movie, hyung?"

"hm?~" Soobin had spaced out and hadn't properly heard Kai.

"Did you like the movie?"

"Oh yeah," Soobin snapped out of his trance and brightened up slightly.

"The ending was totally cool, right? Especially when the protagonist girl decided to let everything go and be free," Kai tried his best to be engaging.

"I know. She was so cool!"

"The scene was slightly melancholic because it meant she'd ever see any of her parents ever again but at least she got to be happy"

"Exactly!"

There was a short silence as both boys replayed the scene in their heads. Kai hadn't really paid attention to it but since it was a movie he had already seen previously, he knew the content.

"Do you think you would ever have the courage to do that?" Soobin asked, peering at Kai.

"Me...? Never, really," Kai laughed.

"Why, not?"

"Because I don't know, it's really just that I don't actually believe that I-"

Just then, Beomgyu's house came into view and Soobin spoke up, cutting off Kai, "Oh, let me just text Taehyun saying we're here, he had told me to, so."

Kai felt slightly hurt at the action and tears instantly pricked up to his eyes as he sadly smiled to himself. He watched Soobin typing out the message and thought to himself, "I wonder if he realized how insensitive that was. Maybe he just doesn't want to hear me talk though, I've obviously already bored him to death today."

There was silence as the boys made their way to Beongyu's front porch, as Kai was about to ring the doorbell, the door opened itself, revealing Beomgyu, Taehyun and Yeonjun shouting, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAI!!!"
