Mr Reed's POV
"Your wife's vitals seem to be fine, her surgery was minor without little risks and her blood tests all came back normal. With a bit of physical exercise she should be able to do normal activities again in a couple days." The doctor uttered.
"But doctor, my Addy has forgotten all of her memories of the past six years!" My mother in law expressed.
"Wait a minute" the doctor scrolled for a while on his screen before seeming to confirm something, he turned back to face us.
"Mrs. Robinson, we will run another MRI scan on your daughter, but the one she received when she came through ER showed no brain damage. Memory loss is quite common for people who have just gone through a traumatic event. I checked her medical files and it seemed that she had a similar incident six years ago is that correct?"
"Yes that's true, she was in a car crash on the day of her high school graduation" my mother in law muttered.
The doctor sighed, clasping his hands together and leaning in closer to us. "Ms. Reed's psychiatrist who was incase of her case has written down that she had most likely shut off her memories six years ago because a significant trauma experienced throughout her childhood was re-experienced during her first accident. As the brain couldn't separate the memories from her trauma from her ordinary memories, it completely wiped her memory to stop an immense amount of pain."
I turned in disbelief to face my mother in law, before we got married Addy's parents had told me that she lost her memories because she saw something traumatic before her accident, but I never knew her amnesia was due to an ongoing trauma.
The doctor began to speak again "the psychiatrist also said that she was beginning to regain some of her lost memories recently, is this true Mr. Reed?" I nodded "we moved back here because Addison want to remember her past, mr. Johnson said that there would be no problems with this process, is something wrong?"
The doctor smiled and shook his head "I'm not a psychiatrist so I would need one to weigh in on this hypothesis, but I've seen a couple similar cases to this. It seems that Ms. Reed probably began to remember her trauma whilst driving and because this accident was so similar to her one six years ago, it's likely that her brain tried to reset. Meaning that her brain doesn't know how to only wipe the trauma she experienced and thought that starting back over as an 18 year old would be safest for her memory state. Don't worry though, seeing a doctor for a safe process of remembering her memories and being in places she mainly visited will help."
I sighed, this is fixable, I can work with that.
As we left the office I turned to my in-laws,
"What trauma did Addy experience?" I asked sharply, they sighed looking like they were going to burst into tears again."The night of Addy's graduation a close friend of hers passed away and she was the one that discovered the body, she got in the crash trying to take her to a hospital."
My in-laws ran straight back to Addy's room, I sat outside the room for a while to process this.
Did Addy really experience something like that? My Addy that's always so bright and happy.I mustered up the courage to open that door, to face my Addy that doesn't remember me, my Addy that's a teenager.
I glanced through the glass in the door as I slowly turned the handle, she was smiling brightly and laughing with her brother despite everything she's heard today.
Right, Addy's in the most pain right now, mine doesn't match hers so I should help her as mich as I can!
