The meeting in the boardroom was supposed to be serious. It had started off that way. But as Jack commanded the meeting in his usual charming way, he happened to make an offhanded remark to Ianto about prank phone calls, remembering the time he and his husband had prank called Jay when they were dating. He expected Ianto to roll his eyes in that adorable way of his, but his reaction was much better. He let out a musical little laugh - he tried to cover it and grow serious again to focus on the meeting but the grin tugging on his lips gave him away.
"What the bloody hell are you talking about?" Owen demanded, breaking the moment, "what prank call?"
Ianto couldn't take it, he started laughing again, harder this time, and Jack couldn't resist chuckling as well.
"What's so funny?" Gwen asked.
"Nothing," Jack said, trying to bring the focus back to the meeting, "just an... inside joke."
"Well, Weevils aren't a joke." Toshiko put in seriously.
"Right, Big T," Sam said, slapping the table, "back to the Weevils!" She had a cocky, somewhat sarcastic look on her face that implied she wasn't as enthusiastic about the meeting as she seemed.
"Yeah," Jack said, "Weevils. The most recent sightings have been closer to the jungle - but maybe they just like hiding out in the plants, who knows?" He winked at Ianto, unable to resist making his husband laugh again, "plants are normally a good place to remain unseen - most of the time."
Ianto's eyes widened and he slapped a hand over his mouth, but it was no use, he was obviously laughing again.
"This meeting would make more sense if the rookies were in charge." Gwen muttered.
"Forget the plants," Ianto spoke up, eyes sparkling, "we should tell those Weevils about stopwatches!"
Jack roared with laughter at that, leaning over with his hands on the table so he was closer to eye-level with Ianto.
"Good one!" He exclaimed. In a matter of seconds the meeting transformed into a feedback loop of Jack and Ianto telling each other silly jokes that only they seemed to understand and giggling like fools. Sam rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. She reached out and took Jack's notes for the meeting, ready to take over for him - he was so caught up in his and Ianto's own little world he didn't even notice.
"I guess I'll take it from here," she said, and Gwen and Toshiko both giggled while Owen let out an annoyed huff, "we'll give these two some time alone."
"Why don't we hate them?" Owen asked, the beginnings of a smirk creeping onto his face. None of them had the answer to that question, but seeing Jack and Ianto so happy was explanation enough.
