The beeping of the cardiogram filled the silence of the room. Pranpriya's parents were sitting on the couch by the window talking about something, but she can sense tension radiating in their conversation. She and her brother James who just arrived from sat on the stool beside Lalisa's bed. They both hold her hand tightly, praying for her to wake up.
When her father dropped the news earlier, they rushed to the hospital. Her brother who was in Singapore at the moment were informed and tried getting the fastest flight possible to Bangkok. It was a terrible car accident. They collided with a truck coming from a junction on the left side. Our driver saw it and decided to let the truck hit his side rather than the back passenger. He died on the scene. Due to the impact of the collision, Lalisa's head got a heavy concussion that led her into a comatose state.
Pranpriya's eyes were red from constant crying. All her family members did. The doctor's statement also only made the situation worsen.
"She injured her organs very bad. Her kidneys, lungs are severely injured. She depends on the machines to breathe right now. We lost her for a few minutes in the operation room and it's not possible to happen again. We hope all of you to prepare for any possibility."
Their mother collapsed once she heard it. The chance of survival was less than 50%.
"Lalice. Wake up. You promised to go to the audition together." Pranpriya rubbed Lalisa's hand gently. Tears running down her cheeks.
"Yes. Lalice. I said I would cheer for you during the audition. You must wake up. And if you succeed, I will treat you the bag you wanted so much. So wake up to claim that promise from me." James added and rubbed Lalisa's head that was wrapped.
Their parents joined them surrounding Lalisa's sleeping form. They were holding hands as if to give energy to Lalisa to wake. After a moment, the beeping sound went faster. There was something wrong with her heartbeat. All of them went berserk while James pushing the emergency button on the wall.
Doctor and nurses rushed in and they were pushed outside from the room. The voices in the room were frantic. Pranpriya hugged her brother tightly and their mother was in her father's embrace.
After more than fifteen minutes, the doctor came out. His face was sullen. Everyone kinda had the same thoughts in mind.
"She's awake but...." And then he patted her father's shoulder to tell him something in private. They walked a bit further from other family members. From afar, the two siblings could see their parents pale and hopeless expression. They knew bad news was coming on their way.
They entered the room again and Lalisa was wearing an oxygen mask. She smiled at her family members. The smile was weak and not lively like always.
"Lalice, you're awake. You made me worry." Pranpriya hugged her and cried.
"Yes. So don't cry anymore." She coaxed her sister. Her voice was very low. She was too pale.
"My baby. I am so worried. Thank goodness. You must rest a lot and from now on I shall lock you in the house." Their mother said. Joking around trying to lift the mood.
"Dear, please give her space. Why don't we talk to her one by one?"
"No need dad. I don't think I will make it that long." Her statement made her family members alarmed.
"Hey, Lalice. Don't talk nonsense. You will be okay since you're awake." James cut in. The tension fills the air once again.
"I know James. I know its time for me to go. I'm sorry that I won't be with you guys anymore. I met Mina. She said she was waiting for me. She just wanted me to say goodbye to you first. Please don't be sad about me leaving. I love all of you." She stopped, releasing a big puff of air.
"Lily. You are perfect. You are my little sister. I want you to stop living as my shadow. Be yourself. Love yourself and be happy. Live your dream, for me."
Pranpriya shook her head.
"No. It won't be the same. I need you. Please hang on."
Lalisa had a small smile on her face. She looked at her parents.
"I'm sorry but I can't do it anymore. It's so hurt to breathe and talk. I failed you mom, dad. I can't live to your expectations." She sobbed.
"No baby. You never fail us. You are perfect just the way you are." Her mother kissed her forehead.
"Yes dear. We love just the way you are." Her father rubbed her head and planted a kiss on her forehead. His eyes were red from tears.
"James. Thank you for being there with me. I love you brother."
"I love you too. Just rest now. And watch us from above. You will be out guardian angel right?" he suppressed a smile to enlighten the mood.
"Yes. Of course." Lalisa laughed and started coughing. The cough was getting worse by time and blood started coming out from her mouth. James pressed the emergency button for the second time frantically.
"Lalice. Hang on. The doctor will here in a moment. Hang on." Her father said while holding her hand.
The doctor and nurses swarmed in and told them to wait outside. Lalisa's chest was heavily moved up and down and she struggled to breathe. Prayers and cries filled the hallway, wishing for Lalisa's wellness. The doctor emerged from the room with a solemn face.
"Time of death, 5.43 pm. I'm sorry for your loss."
As she heard the statement, her knees lost strength and stumbled on the floor. Her parents and brother joined and hugged each other.
The funeral for Lalisa ended a few hours ago. Once the last guests leave, she went to her room and cried for the nth times. She looked at the picture frames on her dresser. The pictures of three of them since they were babies until now. The last photo was during their vacation to Singapore. Both her and Lalisa wore Minnie's ear headband and James wore Simba hat. The smiles on their faces ached her heart. She wished to stay at the moment forever.
Knock, knock.
"Lily. It's me, are you okay?" James opened the door and saw Pranpriya on her bed holding a picture frame. He approached her and embraced her in his arms.
"Oppa. Will we be the same as before?" She turned to James.
"Of course. Lalice'd never leave us. She's here and here. Forever." He pointed at her heart and head.
"I have decided to join the YG audition." She said.
James released her and cupped her cheeks to face him.
"Don't force yourself in something you don't want to do. She wanted you to be happy by following your heart desire, Lily."
"No Oppa. This is really what I want. We have the same dream and this is the way that we can achieve our dream even though we are not together anymore. I do this for both of us. I want to live our dream."
"Whatever your decision is, I will always support you. Our parents and I will be there for you." He patted Pranpriya's head and smiled.
"I know. And I'm grateful for that." She smiled back.
"So, when is the audition?"
"Tomorrow."
The next day,
"Next participant. Pranpriya Bruschweiler." Pranpriya entered the audition room confidently.
"Good morning, my name is Pranpriya Bruschweiler but I would like to be called Lalisa or Lisa." She introduced herself. Her facial expression was serious and held no fear or nervous sign.
"Alright, Lisa. Show us what you have."
I shall live our dream, Lalice.
Her gaze changed as the music started.
