SIRIUS WATCHED THE Muggles and wizards pass in a blur as Derek glanced at his slouching figure. Derek didn't know what led this man to leave his family so late in the night, but he knew there was something wrong. Maybe it was the drastic change from when he saw the man earlier with his friends, or maybe it was because he had been kind enough to tip him when normal wizards and witches don't pay much for these trips. Derek didn't know, but he wanted to provide any sort of comfort he could, especially when he saw the scars lining his face.

"Sirius Black, you said?" Derek asked when Sirius began to fiddle with his wand. "You're going back to Godric's Hollow. You said your friend wasn't there earlier."

"I'll wait if he's not back," was all Sirius said, not really in the mood for talking.

"Black... that's a pureblood name, in'nit?" Derek asked, trying to spark up any conversation. "How old are you?"

"Why're you trying to figure out my life story!?" Sirius snapped before frowning at his tone. He shook his head. "Sorry, Derek, sir. Black is pureblood, but I'm disowned as of ten minutes ago."

"You left?" Derek asked, gaping at the boy. Wizards and witches of pureblood statuses just don't leave.

Sirius laughed mockingly as the bus jolted to a stop and his bed flying away from Derek for the moment. "Yeah, sixteen and left my family. I'm not going along with their prejudices anymore. Besides, they aren't my real family. See, Potter? He's my real family."

"That lad and those ladies from earlier, they're your family, too," Derek reminded, smiling when a bright smile lit onto Sirius's face. He was glad he was able to make the man smile. "Don't sweat it, kid. If I have to come get ya again if this Potter boy isn't there, I will. Wouldn't want you stranded, now, would I?"

"Thanks," Sirius said just as James's house came into view. He felt warmth fill his chest by just looking at it. "I suppose I'll try to see you again, Derek, sir."

Derek shook hands with Sirius once more before aiding with his trunk. Once Sirius walked up to the lawn, the Knight Bus flew away at an astronomical speed. Sirius felt his legs collapse under him, holding onto his trunk for support when he fell into the snow.

His mother had done a number on him, he was sure of that. The effects of the Cruciatus Curse would last into the morning, no doubt, since it was already going on six. He could see the sun beginning to rise behind James's house. Smiling at the light, he welcomed the darkness as his eyes shut unwillingly and his body collapsed into the cold snow.

James woke up when he heard a loud bang from outside his home. It sounded like a car taking off, but the car must've been huge for that sound. He glanced at his bedside table and grabbed his glasses with blurry eyes. When his eyes focused, he saw the time. Six in the bloody morning on Christmas! Who would wake him that early!?

Moving to pull his sweater on and his boots, he ran a hand through his hair as he walked briskly down the stairs. He wanted to make sure nothing had happened outside before he allowed himself to just forget about the silly noise.

As he walked through the hallway to his front door, he opened it wordlessly to only gasp at the man lying on his lawn.

Sirius.

He wanted to grin at the sight of his best mate, but worry took over his features when he called out his name and received no response. He saw Sirius had brought his trunk. Without wasting a second, he ran outside into the freezing cold weather to pick up his best friend as best he could. He could see bruises forming on his face, dry blood on his lip. Cursing his family because that was the obvious choice at who did this to him, James was able to gently put Sirius on his couch. Quickly running to get Sirius's trunk, he allowed himself to call for his mother.
