EUPHEMIA AND FLEAMONT had always been generous people. Growing old with the fear of never having a child stirred something in Euphemia. After being graced with her little James, she never took a thing for granted. Dumbledore had already spoken to the pair about the Order of the Phoenix, the fight their son and his friends would have to fight against the Dark Lord. Euphemia and Fleamont were old, and quite frankly, they were growing sickly with age. They would protect their children, Bonnie and Sirius being two more blessings in their life. They would protect their child's friends until their very end.

But no one expected their end to come so quickly.

James noticed it immediately when he, Sirius, and Lily apparated to the Potter home. Remus decided to go home to check on his mother and father before going to spend the rest of the holidays with the Potters, and Peter did the same with his mother. Marlene wanted to speak to her parents about going into hiding while Mary had to see her adoptive parents; she also told them to go into hiding. After, Mary would go see the Prewetts, bringing them to the Potter home for the protective enchantments.

James's mother was not in the kitchen preparing a meal, nor were the Christmas decoration finished. In fact, there were boxes left open but unused, and the Christmas tree sat half-done. James's father was not in the study reading or listening to music. In fact, the house was too quiet.

Without wasting a second, he dropped his trunk at the front step and ran to his parents' room. He sighed in relief when he opened the door, his mother and father lying in bed, chests' rising. His relief turned to worry when he saw how pale and sickly they looked.

"Mum! Dad!" he yelled, waking up the pair. Euphemia coughed, trying to sit up.

"No, no. James, don't come here," she said in a low tone. Sirius, Lily, and Bonnie finally made it up the stairs, all three gasping at the sight. "I'm sorry, honey. I tried to wake up in time to finish the house—" she fell into a coughing fit. "We're all right.

Fleamont finally managed to sit up as well, aiding his wife as they stood shakily. "We're glad you made it here okay, son," Fleamont said, smiling weakly at James and Sirius.

"W-What's happened?" James asked shakily, Lily walking forward to place a hand on his arm. To everyone's surprise, he shrugged her off. "Mum," he said again.

"I'm sorry, Jamesie," Euphemia said, falling back into a sit on the bed. "It can't be cured, I'm afraid... I-I—your father and I, we've been exposed to Dragon Pox. You four need to stay back, okay? You—you can't get it from being in the room, but you can't touch us directly."

James looked at Bonnie. "What's Dragon Pox?"

Bonnie's eyes welled up in tears. "It's a f-fatal disease, James."

James's resolve broke as he looked to his parents who were barely holding each other up. "S-So what? What can I do?"

Fleamont smiled grimly. "Y-You can't d-do nothing, son. We'll—" he began to cough. "We'll stay up here, you four go down and clean up the place. Make sure everything is all right for when your friends come."

James's eyes grew wide and a fit of anger lit up in them. "So what!? I'm supposed to just go down and act like my parents aren't dying!"

Euphemia smiled softly. "You're so much like your father, you are. Yes, unfortunately, this won't—it won't be cured. James—"

But James had stormed off.

Lily turned to follow him, but she paused, shaking her head. She looked at Bonnie as the sound of the door slamming shut was heard. "Should I go?"

Bonnie nodded. "I'll stay here and clean up. G-Go." She looked to Sirius, the ebony-haired boy's eyes filled with unshed tears as he stared at the parents who filled the role he so desperately needed. They had been everything to him, much like James. Bonnie grabbed Sirius's hand as she looked to Euphemia and Fleamont. "I-I'll go clean and bring you something to eat. Hot soup may make you feel better."
