JAMES STARED AT the large group of students trying out for Quidditch. Sure, he could see Marlene and Bonnie off to the side, leaning on their brooms as they spoke. Sirius was on laying on the ground next to them, eyes trained on Bonnie as the witch spoke. He smirked a bit at the scene, wondering if Sirius felt more for their little Bonnie than he was letting on. Shaking his head to rid the thoughts, he looked in the stands to see Mary, Remus, Peter, and Lily cheering on their friends. He grinned at them before calling out that trials were beginning. Sirius stood slowly, moving to be as close to Bonnie as possible.
Watching Bonnie on a broomstick was not something James or Sirius thought they'd ever see. When she threw one leg over to hover over the ground, Sirius saw how confident she looked—how fit she looked. James walked over to his mate, patting him roughly on the shoulder.
"Chin up, Pads, you're drooling," James teased, moving his hand to close Sirius's mouth. "All right, a few laps around the pitch. Let's go!" Sirius stood there. "That means you, too," James whispered with a snigger. Sirius glared at his best mate before quickly getting on his broom to catch up with the rest of them.
Bonnie was fast.
James stared at her with impressive eyes, watching how she seemed to dance around Sirius. He couldn't help but smile as the pair teased each other in the sky. Before the large group of students were finished with their laps, James had already kicked out a bunch of Gryffindors who could barely stay up.
When James called everyone back down, he yelled out, "All right, let's get the Chaser trials over with!" James already had his other two Chasers, but to keep it fair, he had to trial all of them. When he found Virginia Bell and Kenny Sloper's eyes, he winked at the pair. They were obviously the best out of the players trying. He yelled a thanks to the Chasers, and he sent them off. Next, keeping Bell next to him, he called for the Keepers. There were three trying out besides his Keeper from the year before, Matthew Nugent. "Bell and I will give each of you ten shots. Spinnet! You're first!"
Bonnie stood next to Sirius and Marlene as they watched James. Marlene smiled James's way. "He's good at the whole captain thing, isn't he?"
"Very," Bonnie muttered, tightening her hand around the broom. There were two other people trying for the Beater position, and she knew one was the backup for the Prewett twins.
Sirius noticed Bonnie's shaking hand. He placed his over hers that was sitting on the broom. Her eyes met his as he smiled. "All right?"
"Fine."
Sirius leaned over to her ear. "You'll do wonderful, Bonnie. You're wonderful at everything you do."
"And if I don't make it?"
"You'll get to cheer me on," he replied cheekily, placing a chaste kiss under her ear. She blushed profusely when he sent her a wink after. Bonnie's eyes moved to Marlene, the witch practically jumping with wide eyes at the action that Sirius had done to Bonnie. Bonnie sent her a look, but Marlene grinned further.
James was in the air now.
"All right, my Beaters. All four of you in the air, grab a bat," he called, eyes trained on Bonnie and Sirius who stood closer than before.
Bonnie felt like she did all right, but she wasn't confident in her abilities. Sirius played like he has been his whole life, the boy who was the backup for Fabian and Gideon was working well with him. Bonnie knew she was doing well enough when Remus sent her a thumbs up, but she didn't know for sure if she would make it.
The thought didn't really bother her. After all, she was only doing this to make James happy.
Marlene and one other girl were going for Seeker. Marlene flew around the pitch like a bullet, and Bonnie knew she'd get it.
