"YOUR MOVE, FABIAN," Bonnie said, eyeing the red-haired man with a manic look in her eye. She was staring at the chess board with almost a laugh bubbling from her chest.
Fabian shook his head. "You can't beat me at chess," he said with a snort.
"When did you and Mary get married?" Bonnie asked while watching his move carefully.
"It was just us, our parents, and Gideon," Fabian said with a shrug. "A few months ago. Your move."
Bonnie took her knight, moving and taking out a pawn. It was that easy. That's what happened to Peter.
"Yours."
Fabian chuckled to himself, moving his piece. "I believe that's another for me."
Bonnie nodded, realizing she screwed up another round. Biting her lip, she thought out her next play very carefully. "Your turn," she said after a few moments.
Fabian smirked just as a few cracks were heard outside the home. They were in The Burrow. Fabian decided this was better than her flat because she needed a change of scenery. He knew from Sirius that she was not taking Peter's death lightly. Bilius was there, upstairs with Charlie, Percy, and Bill while the twins napped.
Molly and Arthur were first, eyeing Bonnie carefully when they saw her in the game with Fabian. It was not wizard's chess since Arthur collected Muggle things.
Then, Sirius, James, and Regulus appeared. All stared at the game apprehensively. Mary, Lily, and Gideon were next. It was quiet, the only words were, "Your move," or "Yours." No one expected her to be calm. They expected to apparate and there be crying or yelling.
It was too silent.
Finally, Fabian said, "Checkmate, darling."
"But do you see? You may have won, but look at who is left on your side. All that was sacrificed... Hardly anyone survived—certainly no pawns. That's what Dumbledore is going to let happen," Bonnie said with a shake of her head. "We're all going to end up killed or grieving before it's over."
She stood up, using her wand to clean up the board. Sirius approached her, taking her hand. "Bon," he called weakly.
She looked at her friends. "I'm sorry for my outburst. Peter did not deserve that."
"Are you okay, love?" James asked quietly.
"It'll be fine. Eventually," she muttered as a cry came from upstairs. "I'll get them."
When one twin cried, the other soon followed.
"I'll come," Sirius offered, and Bonnie shrugged as she walked up the stairs.
"Thanks, Fabian," Lily whispered. "I think we should have waited until she was calmer to have Peter's funeral. She'll beat herself up over missing it."
Fabian nodded. "I knew I had to get her out of there. Sorry for bolting, baby," he said to Mary.
Mary smiled at him. "She needed someone."
Molly ran a hand through her hair as her children came barreling down the stairs to greet everyone. Bilius rose a brow as he followed. "Anyone want to fill me in on why Fabian had to practically drag Bonnie in here?"
Bonnie smiled as she neared the twins' beds. "Oh, are you two hungry? Look how big you are," she cooed, the babies being a few months over one.
Sirius smiled at the action of Bonnie tickling both babies until they were giggling messes. "C'mon, Freddie. Sirius, grab George. I can't hold them together anymore."
