BONNIE HAD BEEN quiet since Dumbledore's visit. James and Sirius were both kicked out due to keeping Sirius out of the loop for now, but even Dumbledore began to think they would need more help than ever to defeat Voldemort. He had started his group called the Order of the Phoenix, but only of-age wizards were allowed in. Dumbledore said Bonnie's mission was something of importance, but it was not something that needed to be broadcasted. The Order would take to fighting the Death Eaters, and hopefully, save Muggle and Muggle-born families that were being attacked.
"I seem to forget myself," he had said, "for you know about the Order... I even asked you to be in it, did I not?" Bonnie had slightly nodded. "The old age seems to take a toll on my memory, as you remember."
When he left, Sirius walked back into the room with a nod toward the old wizard. Sitting next to Bonnie where he had occupied that very same place for over a week, he gave her a tired smile. She merely stared at him, finding a smile hard to produce. He frowned, looked down and hastily reached in the pockets of his leather jacket for a cigarette.
When he lit it, he was surprised when he saw Bonnie's dainty hand reach out and take it from his lips before he truly took a drag. He watched her full lips wrap around the cancer stick, her tired eyes closing at the feeling, and then, she blew out smoke as if it were robotically memorized. Taking two more small drags, she finally reached over to hand it back to the ebony-haired boy.
"Are you feeling better?" Sirius dared to ask, finding words hard to place as he had yet to hear her say anything besides a shaky 'Get Dumbledore' after the screaming and whimpering of pain had stopped. James hadn't hesitated, making Sirius's curiosity rise. "Bon?" he asked again when she didn't answer.
Bonnie really took the moment to stare at Sirius Black. Everything with the pair was different in this life than it was in her past. She seemed to prefer this time, not enjoying the constant arguing between the two, but then again, she worried that Sirius only saw her as a good friend. What if he never unlocked the feelings that she seemed to have for thirty years of her life. The rational side of her brain said he wouldn't care as much as he was if he didn't like her, but the uncertainty and fear and insecurities rose high when the two were alone.
"My headache seems to be dimming, but my back and chest still burn a bit—it'll go away eventually, I suppose," she whispered, watching the boy finish the cigarette before tossing it out the slightly open window. He closed it when he noticed the slight shiver from the girl in his bed. "Is this your room?" Bonnie had never been to the Potter home even if she met his parents briefly in her past life. This was all new to her.
Sirius looked around, slightly bummed that he hadn't cleaned the clothes scattered near his closet. "Yeah, Mum gave me the next largest room after James. She was adament I was comfortable, but I told her I'd be comfortable on the couch," he trailed off with a slight laugh. Bonnie smiled, and Sirius was awestruck by how much the smile changed the tone of the room. "I really enjoy when you smile," he blurted stupidly.
Thinking she would view him odd for saying that, he was pleasantly surprised to hear a slight laugh bubble from her throat. She bit her lip to hide the smile that was growing, and Sirius could have sworn he felt like the King of the World just by causing that smile and laugh from her.
"I admire what you and our friends did, Sirius," Bonnie said after a moment of silence of the two in their own heads. Bonnie thought of a way to thank her friends for helping her, and Sirius thought of what being in love truly felt like—he wanted to think he was heading in that direction, but how would he know? "I-I tried to think of a plan to get out of there, but I was being forced to—"
"You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to, sweetheart," Sirius stated when he saw her hesitate and her hands begin to shake.
"No, I need to not be a coward about it," Bonnie said, letting out a breath. She couldn't be a coward again, she just couldn't!
