DUMBLEDORE WAS SURPRISED to see James Potter practically yanking Bonnie Miller into his office. When asking what they were doing there, Bonnie gave the Headmaster a sheepish grin as she answered.
"I sort of exploded, and James sort of knows that I've sort of gone back in time," Bonnie mumbled, Dumbledore's eyes shooting up at the news. He didn't expect James to know first. "Oh, Professor, don't look at me like that! He was there, and I couldn't help the word vomit!"
Dumbledore chuckled slightly, asking the pair to sit down. After explaining absolutely everything to James, who listened intently with his hand still tightly wrapped with Bonnie's, James finally frowned and turned to the witch. "W-When you say you saw us die, you mean—"
"She felt everything you felt when you died," Dumbledore explained, not wanting James to focus too much on that. "She felt each death, except Alice and Frank who were only tortured into insanity. She still felt their pain, however."
James felt his own tears prickle at his eyes. Bonnie had gone through so much, and she still acted like a normal student every day. No one could suspect it was bigger than anyone could even imagine.
"Sir, these Horcruxes, what can I do to help—"
"No, I don't want any chance of any of you dying. You can help figure them out, but I can't let you risk your life—"
"And you get to!?" James replied hotly, turning to face the witch. "No, absolutely not. You're through going through this alone. Whether or not you want to let the others know is up to you, but don't expect me to sit here and twiddle my thumbs while you almost die trying to find these things! The spell that went badly wrong had you limping for weeks! You're not doing this on your own. Not anymore, Bonnie."
"Well said, Mr. Potter," McGonagall's voice made him turn sharply to look at her, face going red at his outburst. "I assumed when the two of you didn't return to my office or to breakfast, you'd most likely be here. I'm glad my assumptions were correct. Your friends are very worried about the two of you."
"Yes, yes. The train will be coming soon," Dumbledore said with a smile. "Now, Mr. Potter, you must swear not to tell anyone. Not Mr. Black, Mr. Lupin, and definitely not Mr. Pettigrew. They will know soon, but not now. We shall not do anything during the summer because it would be impossible with the trace still on each of you. As you've said, Bonnie will not be doing this alone anymore. I will request that you join our meetings when the term resumes."
"Yes, Sir," James replied.
"Hmmph," McGonagall said. "Seems you'll be maturing, after all, Mr. Potter."
James gave a sheepish grin as Dumbledore released the two to find their friends. Instead of holding her hand, he threw an arm around Bonnie's shoulder as they walked to the common room. James frowned. "We missed breakfast. Want to stop at the kitchen?"
"No, Lily'll kill me if she doesn't find me soon," Bonnie replied.
"If she can't find you, she can't kill you," James said cheekily.
Bonnie snorted as they walked into the common room to be bombarded with questions. Sirius eyed the two suspiciously as James held Bonnie impossibly close even as the two spoke to their different group of friends. Finally, Bonnie mumbled to James that she was getting her trunk. He nodded and released her.
"Why the hell were you two in Dumbledore's office?" Sirius asked, trying everything to keep his tone neutral. Lily, Marlene, Mary, Remus, and Peter listened intently to James's answer.
"Dumbledore wants me to help Bonnie with her special lessons next term. No biggie," James replied easily. He smiled when Bonnie dragged her luggage from the staircase.
