"Oh, Maddy...I'm sorry. I didn't know."
I feel super embarrassed to be standing here right now as Maddy starts bawling in the parking lot. I want to hug her so badly, but I'm the dumbass who caused this in the first place. Well, not the break up at least. Unless I did that too. I'm probably giving myself too much credit here.
"What happened?" I ask softly and wrap my arms around her.
She buries her face in my shoulder and cries even harder. If I would've just talked to her last night, I would already know the answer.
"We had dinner and then h-he just went into this long conversation about how he thinks we're just too different and he doesn't think it's going to work out. How could he do that? I thought everything was working out fine!" She sobs.
I held her tightly and let her cry into my tank top. How could anyone break up with Maddy after that delicious meal she cooked? He's insane.
"I just feel so stupid, y'know? I'm such an attention seeking little whore that I dressed up in this stupid uncomfortable dress and pranced in here to latch onto some creep when I know damn well that all I want is him!"
My heart aches for her. There's nothing I can say at this moment to make her feel better. I do know how she feels, though.
"Let's go. We can talk about this more on the way home, okay?" I suggest and pull her towards the car.
She stumbles a little so I help her get in the seat. She doesn't stop talking the entire ride back to the apartment. I don't even know how she's gathering any thoughts considering all the alcohol coursing through her.
We finally get back home and I help her inside and down the hall to her room. I get her a pair of clothes for her and grab a glass of water with some ibuprofen while she changes. Her face is pressed deep into the pillow when I get back.
"Take this. It'll help with the headache so you can at least get some sleep." I tell her and hold the items out.
She groggily sits up and takes the medicine from me. She throws it back without any water and swallows the pill. I will never understand how anyone does that. It's a bit scary.
I sit down on the edge of the bed and pull the covers over her. Maddy rubs her hands together and stares at the sheets. She must have a lot on her mind. I wish I could read it but it seems like a scary place to be.
"Do you want to talk about it more?" I ask, trying my best to comfort her.
She shakes her head and pats the empty spot next to her. "Can you lay with me?"
I chuckle under my breath and climb under the covers next to her. She hates sleeping alone when she's upset. I don't mind filling the empty space as long as it makes her feel better.
"Get some rest, Mads." I whisper to her.
By the time I reach over to turn off the bedroom lamp, she's already asleep. I push her tangled hair away from her face and adjust the covers on both of us. The sleep starts to hit me hard as well and I even start to dream.
I see Maddy and Selena laughing. They're drinking their iced coffees and talking, but I can't really hear what they're saying. Selena starts talking softer and Maddy starts yelling. Selena sets her iced coffee on the table and gets up. She walks towards the road without looking. Maddy looks to me and screams,
"What are you doing! Why are you letting her walk away?"
I can't move. I'm stuck in my chair.
There's a loud screeching and thump behind us, but I can't turn around to see what happened.
"You selfish bitch. All you had to do was be there for her and you couldn't do that. That's why she's dead."
It was an accident. It was a mistake. No one knew she was going to get drunk and leave. No one knew that car would run a red light. No one knew.
No one knew.
"Bree? Hey, wake up. Bree? Open your eyes." Maddy's voice rings in my ears.
I convulse and inhale sharply. I open my eyes to the sun shining through the blinds into my face, forcing me to squint. Maddy's head is hanging over me. She looks worried.
"Are you okay? You were fucking yelling." She says and sits Indian style next to me.
I sit up and push my hair out of my face. It's wet from the collection of sweat on my forehead. Gross.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry." I tell her and climb off the bed.
"What were you dreaming about?" She asks.
I don't want to tell her I was having a nightmare about Selena. We finally got to the point where we don't let it fuck us up like it used to. If I tell her that then she'll start to worry and maybe even get it in her head too.
"I don't really remember." I lie and bite my lip.
She pushes herself off the edge of the bed and nods. Maddy always looks like a goddess in the morning. Her long, wavy hair drapes over her shoulders. There isn't any frizz in site and she looks gorgeous without makeup. I've always been envious of her but I turn all of that into reasons to admire her as my best friend.
"Do you want to go get some coffee downtown?" She asks and cracks a smile.
"As long as it's not Scream Beans." I tell her and mean it.
The last thing I want to do is go there on my day off. Especially if our new boss or Lana is there.
"Deal. Get dressed and we'll leave in ten minutes."
She scurries off to the bathroom with her outfit in her arms. I walk down the hall to my bedroom and contemplate taking another shower but decide I could just wait for that. We're just getting coffee and coming back anyway.
I meet Maddy outside by the car when I'm finished getting dressed. Her casual morning attire involves a baggy light blue sweatshirt and gray shorts. I just put on sweatpants, a t-shirt, and call it a day.
Maddy drives us down to the cute little café east of my job and all of the clubs. It rests in between all of the important desk job buildings. I guess for them to send their interns to do coffee runs.
"Yay, it's not too packed!" She squeals and parks right in front of the door.
"How do you always find spots right up front?" I ask and climb out the car.
"Princess parking." She brags and winks, giving her hair a flip with her hand.
"Right."
