Chapter 1: keeping things simple

For as long as you could remember, the idea of having a child was something you looked forward to; the end goal, if you will. After you successfully achieved everything you had set out to do in terms of your career, you’d always planned to settle down with a nice guy and start a family.

Of course, life never worked out the way you planned it. One failed engagement under your belt, and approaching your mid-thirties, you felt as if you were running out of time to have a child. The backup plan had always been sperm donation. Working in paediatrics, you had more than enough knowledge and resources when it came to having a baby on your own. The added strain on your career seemed a small price to pay when it came to achieving the one thing your life was lacking.

Another spanner in the works came in the form of endometriosis – something you had suffered with for a while, mostly in denial of the fact it would do anything to affect your primary goal of carrying a child. But, once the diagnosis came, you resigned yourself to the fact that having a child was going to be much harder for you, if not completely impossible. Sperm donation already a risky procedure on its own, your diminished odds made it a pointless venture.

And so, all of this brought you to were you were today, about to attend a consultation with an adoption agency. A successful career in neonatology meant you were able to afford the rather pricey end of the spectrum when it came to adoption agencies, and it also gave you a good record as you were more than able to pay for everything the baby would need. You were ready, you were prepared and you were hopeful.
“Miss Y/N?”

A tall lady with dark-rimmed glasses and a grey charcoal suit approached you, her face fixed into a polite smile and her hand outstretched, “A pleasure to meet you. Please come this way,”
You barely had time to give her hand one firm shake before she was walking away from you towards the corridor where she came from, barking the occasional order as petrified interns and receptionists as she led you to her pristine, sterile office. It made you feel oddly uncomfortable, even though you were more than used to this kind of environment.

Taking a seat opposite the woman, you watched with your purse on your lap as she fired up her computer and took off her glasses, allowing them to hang around her neck on a silver chain.
“So, I believe you were given the correct forms?”
You nodded, voice hoarse as you spoke, “Uh, oh, yes. I have them here,” you cleared your throat, pulling the papers from your bag and handing them over the desk, “I made copies too,” the woman peered over at you, raising a perfectly groomed brow, “I just like to be prepared,”
