on the hogwarts express, lily decided to sit with her hufflepuff friends as she hadn't really spoke to them all summer.

"not a single owl! from any of you!" she complained, even if she already knew why. "only from the gerber twins and it was just to tell me they were leaving to the us! an outrage, honestly!"

"dumbledore said not to. he thought you should grieve on your own, plus i did send letters and they got returned anyways."

"i'm fine now, truly," she said, a hint of sorrow in her eyes.

"it's okay if you're not."

"yeah, it'll be okay! you got us! and ron! hermione, harry! the whole hufflepuff house! especially since we all know you're gonna be appointed prefect this year!" talia grinned from ear to ear.

"i hope so, i haven't been such a great leader lately."

"no one blames you for anything!"

"i'm sure professor sprout will understand."

lily stood up and walked to the bathroom.

"hey lily!" called people from the tables.

"hi!"

"how was your summer, lily?"

"it was alright," she said to ernie. "yours?"

"fine," he smiled.

"hi lily!"

"hey!"

she replied to the people and finally made it back to her cart.

"everyone sure is chirpy today."

"doesn't it make you happy?"

"of course it does. i-its just out of the norm," she mumbled, but then she pieced it together. "you told them to be nice to me, didn't you?"

the two girls looked down.

"i appreciate it but i am fine! i don't need special treatment. i just want to get through owls, i can't give enough to care about my reputation."

the two girls nodded, knowing how serious she was about her grades.

lily and hermione were the two highest ranking witches in their year. the two like to playfully compete with each other, even though they have their study group together with susan bones and parvati patil.

ron wasn't very studious, but due to his desire to spend more time with lily, he asked her if they could be study partners "for owls". hermione figured out his true intentions, but lily was clueless.

"are you gonna be with your study group again?" kim asked.

"no, ron asked to be study partners."

talia scrunched up her nose. "ron?"

"he needs a tutor," lily clarified, reading the new textbook for astronomy.

"ah, i see. the ol' can you be my tutor trick," kim smirked.

"what?" lily looked up, confused at their words.

"nothing," the two giggled.

soon it became dark and the students arrived to hogwarts.

"hurry lily!" called talia, lily tried to run but dropped her wand, so she missed the last carrige.

she sighed and turned around, to find ron, hermione harry and neville.

"hi!" she smiled.

"hey lily," the four waved. suddenly, a carriage pull up with a platinum blonde in it.

"whats that?" harry asked as he turned, looking quite scared. "pulling the carriages."

ron and lily looked at each other, confused but then shrugged it off and started to board the carriage.

"nothing, harry, they're pulling themselves like always," hermione said, following ron and lily. lily got on the carriage first, with the help of ron, who held her hand the whole way.

"hi luna."

"hi lily," lily smiled and sat next to her, with ron on her other side.

"everyone this is loony- luna lovegood," hermione said, calling luna by her degrading nickname, though she didn't seem to mind.

"i like your necklace," lily smiled.

"it's a charm actually, keeps away the nargles," she whispered to neville, who made an uncomfortable face. lily snickered at his face.

"what's a nargle?"

"dunno!"
