after first years were sorted, the feast began just any other year. it was obvious how many students were missing as the tables seemed emptier than usual.

"small turn out," ernie laughed, receiving backhanded slaps on his arms by lily and talia.

"does hermione looked worried to you?" talia asked out loud.

"dunno, not looking at her," jackson smirked, teasing his bisexual friend.

"i mean, everyone looks a bit more on edge, don't you think?" kim excused his dumb behavior.

"i'm gonna talk to her," she said, pushing her plate forward, and leaving the table.

lily bit into her pudding and offered some to ernie, turning around to check on ron and talia.

ernie let her spoon into his mouth and ate the pudding.

she watched as harry came into the hall and talia came back.

"so?" lily asked.

"apparently harry was missing, she said he left to the loo before we arrived and that they thought he was already at the school when they came. he just turned up right now and it looks like his nose is broken," talia said, looking over her shoulder.

"oh god. i wonder what happened to him," lily began to grow worried.

"probably nicked a fight and lost," ernie smirked, making jackson and matt laugh.

"it's not funny ern," lily frowned at him.

feeling guilty, he dropped his smirk. "you're right, love."

she nodded and rubbed his hand.

"wimp," matt teased.

"leave him alone," lily responded before ernie could say anything witty. "if he stays this way, then maybe i'll consider him."

"consider him? you snogged him for a minute in front of everyone," jackson argued.

"test of courage," she joked, making them laugh.

once dumbledore gave his usual speech, the feasted ended, and ron tried to talk to lily.

"hey lily, didn't see you on the train," he told her.

"oh, sorry. i got caught up with prefect duties. didn't see you there and i thought i would."

"hermione and i left early," she nodded sadly. "you wanna go for a stroll?" he suggested.

"i would love to, but i have to take the first years to the dormitory. sorry, maybe next time," she waved him off and intertwined hands with ernie who was waiting for her.

they gathered the seven first years, three girls and four boys.

"there's no password so don't worry. all you have to do is tap on this barrel thats two from the bottom, middle of the second row in the rhythm of 'helga hufflepuff'. try it andy," she said clearly, making the small boy nervously walk up and do as she did. the large lid swung open and revealed the passage way to their common room.

ernie smiled at how good she was with kids.

"now, this is the common room, curfew is after dinner, you should be back by then unless you have excused activities, although the kitchens always open for us," he whispered, earning a smack on the arm by lily.

"you should always feel safe here, no ones ever been in danger and it's the hardest to get into," she assured them. "now you three girls, follow me, i'll show you your dorm."

the three 11 year olds followed lily through the circular passage way and took them to the first year dorms.

once she retuned to the common room, she saw ernie and her friends around the fireplace.

"look at you two, being prefects n' all," jackson laughed.

lily sat next to ernie and exhaled loudly.

"gotta wake up early tomorrow to take them too class as well," she sighed, making ernie groan.

"curse me," he whined.
