Shuichi had been attending Hope's Peak for about two years now.
Being away from your parents in a school with dorms surrounded by woods was definitely an experience. He'd be lying if he said he didn't like being here. Whether he'd be sitting surrounded by books in the large school library or sitting cozily in his form room with a scented candle and staring at the snow outside, while his roommate Rantaro Amami was asleep he wouldn't deny this place was like his natural habitat.
But there was one thing in particular that made him happy. And it started around a year ago.
For context, the school, as expected from a prestigious academy, had a codex of rules it followed to a tee. No running in the halls or wondering at night, dress codes, curfew, all that stuff, and one of the rules was
Romantic relationships are prohibited.
The school was trying to push a system of studying over student relationships and thought romance would interfere with such a thing. The rooms were even given so that no boy had a girl roommate. This worked for the majority.
Romantic relationships online while not impossible were still difficult due to the wifi problems of being in a forest. You'd either have to do it during IT class or have to get extremely lucky and sneak out at night to the school's cellar to get three bars and even then there'd already been at least three people using this cheat per day for different purposes.
But that wasn't about to stop the students.
Shuichi never really had an interest in romance, his roommate Rantaro on the other hand had a girlfriend. Luckily for him, his love interest was a wall away, and even more so a small hole was between the walls for them to talk to if the excuse of 'group project' wasn't enough to get him into her room.
However, he had no idea someone had been looking at him, the same way as Amami at her.
One day, he was sitting in the library with barely anyone else there and reading a book when he heard a tumbling of books to the floor. He walked around the corner to see his roommate, who had accidentally dropped a lot of books to the floor.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm okay but would you mind helping me put these back?" Rantaro asked, "Curfew's soon."
Shuichi agreed and helped Rantaro with putting back the books before walking back to the table which had his own book lying there. He was surprised to find the book was now closed, not open like how he left it. He paid it no mind, deciding he should get back before curfew and chose to borrow the book from the library.
When he settled in his room, a scented candle lit on his bedside table he noticed something sticking out of the book which he knew wasn't there before.
It was a letter.
Dear Saihara-chan,
I snuck this in while you weren't looking! Anyway, I think you're the cutest and smartest boy in class. I've been admiring you from afar for a while. Or maybe that's a lie? That's for you to figure out my beloved!
Sincerely, your secret admirer ♡
This took Shuichi by surprise. Why would anybody...? Shuichi didn't really know anybody that much due to the school's system, besides his roommate of course. He wasn't very social, to begin with so that didn't really help either. But oddly he found himself staring at the letter with fondness, observing the neat cursive, the lavender perfume smell coming off the paper, and the tiny doodle of a heart.
