Yunho sat at the cafe on campus, nose stuck in a textbook as he idly stirred a latte for no apparent reason other than because he could. He'd arranged to meet his mother's friend's son here, although he wasn't sure what the hell he was about to get himself into.
As he drew lines under words in his own textbook, highlighting the important points, a voice from behind him dragged him from his line of thought...
'Jeong Yunho?'
He turned around to see a boy standing before him, glancing around nervously as though he might have just approached the wrong person.
'Jongho, right?'
The boy heaved a sigh of relief and dropped down into the seat opposite him. 'Yeah, that's right. It's nice to meet you! I'm sorry my mother kinda hounded your mother...'
Yunho shook his head, brushing it off. He'd prefer not to think about it. 'It's fine. I hear you're second year pre-med?'
Jongho nodded, plonking some books down on the table. 'First year was hard, but this... this is just ridiculous...'
There was an obvious tint of sadness in the boy's eyes as he stared down at his study books. It made Yunho internally groan, making him feel compelled to help the poor soul - exactly what he hadn't wanted to do. 'What bits keep getting you stuck? Which body system?'
Jongho groaned, already pulling at his hair. 'I just can't seem to get the pathophysiology through my head with the disorders of the nervous system. I think I managed to understand most of the other areas we are covering in classes, but anything nervous tissue related just confuses me... it's too abstract...'
Yunho sighed, shutting his own books and leaning forward. He pulled out his own pens and some fresh paper and readied himself for the long haul. 'It's okay, I struggled too when I first learned about it. It's just because the units are so small, it's hard to picture. You just have to remember what the normal is, and then make connections with what isn't functioning as it should. Let's start easy, shall we?'
And so just like that, coffee in hand, Yunho begun tutoring the eager yet frustrated boy, wondering what on earth he was doing in that moment.
But several hours, and multiple toasted sandwiches and coffees later, as lightbulbs started going off more frequently and a smile started growing on Jongho's face, Yunho couldn't help but feel a little proud. He'd helped, and it made him feel good. Jongho was so dedicated and determined...
It reminded him of San's words, and once again, he felt his tables turning. He started to see the spark that had caused him to fall for medicine in the first place - the same passion that made him feel that things weren't so bad after all.
But for how long that would last, that was anyone's guess.
