'Who is it?' The voice was frail and airy.
'It's San. Open the door, Wooyoung.'
San had been knocking and calling from outside Wooyoung's door for a few gruelling minutes before it finally swung open, very slowly.
And San's level of panic, if at all possible, went through the roof.
Wooyoung looked sicker than anyone he'd ever seen. As pale as a sheet of paper, covered in a blanket and still shivering, his lips were cracked, his eyes bloodshot and overall, he just looked sickly.
San was momentarily shocked, but as Wooyoung stepped back and lost his balance, he rushed forward, catching him.
But he did not intend on taking him back to bed.
San glanced to the side of the door and noticed a small table with keys - including the ones that he recognised from a few nights ago. He grabbed them and then picked up Wooyoung, one arm under his knees and the other round his back, sweeping his blanket up with him.
'S-San, what are you...'
He pulled the door shut behind them and started carrying him downstairs, ignoring his complaints.
'S- San, where are you taking me?' His voice was so weak that it was barely a whisper. He tried to push away from him, but the fact that he could barely even manage to push San's head to the side just made him even more sure of himself.
'I'm sorry, Woo, but you've gotta go.'
As San descended the stairs, making his way to the car, Wooyoung immediately started panicking. 'No, please, no.'
San shook his head, devastated by the weak attempts of the boy.
As he got to the car, he managed to open the door without having to put Wooyoung down, gently putting him down in the passenger's seat.
Tucking his blanket fondly around him, he put the seatbelt on him and then went around the driver's seat.
'San, Sannie, please don't take me to hospital, please, please? Hmm? Sannie...'
San tried his best to shut out his manipulative begging as he turned the car on.
'I'm sorry, Woo. But you have to go.'
-
He'd originally planned on taking him to a different hospital, but after just a few minutes of being in the car with him, San realised just how bad he was.
All plans were thrown out the window.
He needed the closest hospital, as soon as possible.
But even so, the effort Wooyoung was using to protest had weaned his energy, and by the time they made it to Emergency, Wooyoung was so drowsy and delirious that he was barely forming intelligible sentences.
San carried him into the ER and just one look from the triage nurse resulted in him skipping the line.
Within five minutes, he was in a bed with bloods and vitals being taken, medical staff coming and going almost constantly.
And as San battled to keep by his side, Wooyoung reached out and grabbed his hand. His strength was weak, but San could feel that Wooyoung was holding on as tightly as he could.
San leaned forward until he was able to whisper to his ear. 'You're going to be okay, Woo.' He brushed his hand through his damp hair before brushing his cheek with his thumb. He thought he could see tears in those shimmering eyes, and so he kept close and whispered comfortingly to him.
'You're going to be okay. I'm going to stay here with you. I'm not going anywhere.'
But when the doctor came to take him away, telling San to stay back, San felt his heart break.
'I'll be here, waiting for you. Okay? I'll see you soon.'
