Chapter 25: Duty-Bound

"BEELZEBUB...! Were you hiding this angel in your room? Did you allow him access to the House of Lamentation? This angel who would try to steal that grimoire...?"

Ivy was frightened by Lucifer at the moment. She heard Luke's whispers. "Y-You've got it all wrong! I wasn't trying to steal it at--"

Mammon turned his eyes to Luke. "Hey, idiot! This ain't no time to be makin' excuses! Once Lucifer flips out, it's no use tryin' to stop him! I mean, there's one guy who could do it, but--"

Lucifer interrupted him. "You two had better be ready to face the consequences...!"

Beel flinched and Luke gasped. Ivy inhaled and made a decision she was sure was extremely stupid. But her nature as a Cosmos demanded it...

She stepped in and shielded them both from Lucifer.

Mammon looked at his old friend with shock. "Ivy?!"

Lucifer glared down at her. "Out of the way, human! Or do you want to die here?!"

Ivy inhaled. "I can't give in, I have to protect them."

She had said it to herself. Beel stared at her with wide eyes. "Stop it, Ivy...!"

Mammon eyed her. "C'mon, this is serious! He's gonna kill you for real!"

Lucifer only gave Ivy that loathing look. "A human risking so much to defend a demon and an angel... how very interesting. Well, if you want to be a hero, you're going to have to choose one of them to save. Beelzebub or Luke. It's one or the other. Make your choice!"

So Ivy can only save Beel or Luke? Words flew from her mouth. "I'd rather die than make a choice. In other words, no. I want to save both."

Beel got silent. Luke stared at the young Cosmos. "Ivy..."

Lucifer didn't like her answer. "What's that now? You want to save both...? Do you actually think I'm going to allow a lowly human that choice?! That you can have whatever it is you WANT?! NO...!"

Ivy then felt herself hit the ground, heard someone scream her name, and then everything went black.

Zach Autumns had arrived just in time to see what Lucifer had done to his eldest child. Now, wrath filled his senses. Zach rushed forward and lunged just as Lucifer turned his head to the noise. Zach let all his fury enter his voice. "HOW DARE YOU HARM MY CHILD!! I'LL RIP YOUR BONES OUT FOR THAT!!"

How dare this demon harm his daughter.

Ivy heard someone calling for her. "... Ivy... Come back to me, Ivy."

Ivy opened her eye to see Beel sitting beside her. "... Ivy. You're awake. I've been here watching you. I thought you might never wake up, since humans are so fragile and all. I'm really glad you're awake again. Do you remember what happened?"

Ivy merely blinked. Beel decided to update her. "You made Lucifer really mad when you stepped in to protect Luke and me. You almost got yourself killed. If Lord Diavolo hadn't come running up, you'd be dead right now, you know. Lord Diavolo managed to stop Lucifer. And your... father, I'm assuming. You saw how Lucifer looked back then, and yet you stepped in front of me and spread your arms to block him. It was like you had a death wish. You need to go to Lord Diavolo and thank him for saving your life."

Ivy rubbed her head. "Was Luke hurt? Also, my father?"

"Nah. Don't worry, he's fine. As for Luke, Simeon came and took him back to Purgatory Hall. He was pretty shaken up after what he experienced. As for your father, I'm merely assuming, he's fine as well. He and Mammon got into an argument after Lord Diavolo stopped Lucifer, but now he's just waiting outside the room for news on your health."
