FluffI was wandering around the playing floor completely bored. I knew this place was seedy but it was home, unfortunately. I hadn't done much of anything tonight but sat and watched the 'customers' if you could even call them that. They were all crooks and criminals. I never had any sympathy for anyone that came through here until my eyes landed on him.
There was something about him that seemed innocent, which was unusual for this place and it didn't hurt that he was gorgeous. On top of that an unseen force seemed to pull me towards him like a magnet.
He was the only one at the Black Jack table, an unusual game for people to play. Mainly because they couldn't cheat it like poker or even the machines. Though to say he was playing would be an understatement. He was barely looking at the cards and winning every hand. The dealer looked annoyed because the guy was barely trying. He caught my eyes for a second and I went to walk away.
"Are you not gonna join?" he asked.
"Hate to mess up your odds," I smiled and attempted to duck away.
"You won't," he smiled with arrogant confidence.
I hesitated but took the seat next to him. I placed a small bet on the table. Just under hundred dollars. Not like it mattered it was daddy's money at daddy's place.
"Oh come on you can do better," he smiled at me. Something sparkled in his eyes. "I've got a feeling you'll win."
I didn't trust people, especially people around here, but I placed down another hundred. He smiled. The dealer started placing cards down. Me and him both got a face card and ace. A winning hand.
"What is a pretty thing like you doing in a dump like this?" he asked, not even looking at his winnings. The dealer definitely looked pissed now. I sent him a 'shut it' look.
"My brother dragged me here, then disappeared," I lied. Not many people took kindly to knowing my father owned the place.
More cards got passed around.
"Hit," the man spun back to me, "My lucky day then. I'm Gladstone."
"Some things matter more than luck and you didn't even check your cards." I stared at him before glancing down 19. I waved the dealer off.
"Don't like to over think it," he shrugged. "And what matters more than luck? Especially in place like this?"
The dealer busted and gave us the corresponding amount of chips, begrudgingly. This guy must've been here a minute because the dealer was making eyes at people across the hall.
"What about safety?" The goose eyed me.
"If you have enough luck you are safe," he smiled but I disagreed. "Want to play a game?"
"Thought we were." I motioned to the cards. I picked up the chips.
Another round started.
"Yea, but you don't seem to be impressed." He looked down at his two face cards, 20. "Split it."
The dealer did and watched as he put down a ten and another face card. Two more 20's. I looked at my hand 18.
"I've played every game down here before. Hit." The dealer frowned but did it. A four hit thrown down and I busted. The dealer took my money.
"What'd you do that for?" His eyebrows shot up. I leaned closer to him.
"You're making enemies."
