Jealousy!

We were out at a local bar in José's hometown. Nearly every female in the place had danced with him by now. Some of them were asking for round two. That was fine by me. We had other things in common. He was mine. He made sure I knew that. He always came back to me at the end of the night despite the number of women or the number of drinks he had.

Right now he was dancing with a girl that had to be half my age in a blue dress. She was blushing like crazy and I thought it was kind of cute. She could've been my little sister. A tap on my shoulder pulled me away from my boyfriend's form.

"Why are you not dancing with José, chico?" Panchito asked.

"I don't know how to and I would hate to stop him from having a good time." He looked shocked.

Despite the fact that I spent all of my free time in the cabana, me and the others knew very little about each other. I supposed that made sense. We had only just met a few months early. I had dated José for about a year now but about six months into it he told me he inherited a place and was going to check it out. I came to visit him two months after that and was surprised to find it was very close to my place of employment in Duckburg.

"You don't know how to dance? Come over tomorrow and I'll teach you!" The rooster's voice pulled me back to the conversation.

"I couldn't." I shook my head, trying to make it clear that I thought it was a bad idea.

"No really, I insist. José will be so happy the next time you go out and dance with him."

"Uh, I don't know." However I was already on my third drink and I couldn't say no to Panchito especially now that he was begging.

"Please. Please. Please, chico. I'll make your favorite desserts!" How could I refuse?

The next day I found myself over at the little hut. I knocked on the door and Panchito answered.

"Hola, chico. Come in." Panchito pushed me through the house. I noticed it seemed rather empty.

"Where is everyone?"

"Oh, Xandra took José and Donald to look for something. No need to worry chico. It was some small library in Greece." He tried to comfort me. I know, firsthand, how bad their quest could get.

"Library in Greece? Like The Library of Alexander the Great?"

"Yes, that one but don't worry though, they checked in a few minutes ago and said everything was going great." He knew I was a worry wart but I trusted them to be safe.

When we got to the back patio it was the size of a small bathroom or closet. I could tell he had just cleaned it too. There were fresh broom streaks in the dirt and the only clean spot was where he had moved a large potted plant or something. The lawn on the other hand was knee high and reminded me of the one time they had managed to convince me to go to the jungle with them.

He plugged up a small radio and sat it on the ground. Then he walked over to me.

"Ready, chico?" I was a little nervous.

"I was promised Sopapillas." He gave me a wry smile.

"With dinner, chico. You can't dance on a full stomach." He laughed.

I signed and took his hands. He showed me the basics. I couldn't tell you how long we were out there a couple of songs. I was just glad it felt nice outside because that was the only reason I was dripping with sweat. I lost count of how many times I stepped on his foot. I throw my hands up in defeat.

"Ugh! I'll never get it!"

"No you've improved so much in just a few hours. Here one more time." I sighed but nodded. He smiled and placed his hands on my hips.

He was embarrassed the first couple times and even kept mumbling apologizes. It was weird to hear that from him. I had always seen him as a confident person, like José. Maybe he just thought it might be awkward because I was with his best friend. Finally he saw I was comfortable with it and even laughed it off. He was a true breed of gentleman, just like José. We had a rhythm now and I was doing more than just swaying. He spun me and I laughed.

"That's the spirit, just have fun with it," he said but I tripped. He caught me in a cliche dip. He apologized and helped me stand.

"No don't stop on my account." I spun on my heel when I heard him. José was leaning on his umbrella in the open doorway of the cabana.

"José." I went to hug him but stopped when I saw his eyes.

They were flaming and they flicked from me to Panchito, who whimpered and stepped back. José grabbed my hand and pulled me to his room. I flinched as the door slammed.

"What was that?" he asked, tapping his foot impatiently.

"I don't understand why you are mad? Panchito was just teaching me to dance."

"Dancing? Is that what he called it? He was all over you." Was he jealous? I had seen him mad but this was different.

"He was a perfect gentleman! He even caught me when I fell!" I defended the rooster.

We hadn't known each other for a long time but he was like a big brother to me and José wasn't going to make me feel bad about that.

"Why didn't you ask me to teach you to dance?" José's voice was very quiet now. He sounded almost scared and wouldn't look at me.

"José it never occurred to me to learn until Panchito brought it up." I moved his head so he had to look at me. I never was going to say anything but I couldn't stop myself. "Besides, José I see you dance with girls every time we go out and you flirt with half of them. I would never stop you from being yourself but I also can't have you being jealous of a dance."

"It's just you've never danced with me." His eyes searched mine for an explanation. I smiled, turned to the small radio in his room. It crackled to life when I pushed the top button.

"Can I have this dance?" He smiled and pulled me into a kiss. Then we danced until someone called us for dinner. José opened the door for us to leave. "Oh, he also promised me Sopapillas."

"Oh, so the truth comes out." He laughed and took my hand and pulled me to the kitchen.
