⚠️ Trigger Warning ⚠️
Alludes to Infertility
A/N: Gilda: GoldI stared at the ceiling. I had been with Scrooge a long time and I had never wished he was an only child more than tonight. I didn't regret opening our home to Hortense or for offering to take her out for the night. It wasn't Hortense that was the bad part, it was Scrooge.
He was completely baby obsessed now that he had access to the twins 24/7. And after spending the day with them he was head over heels for them. He had gotten that way before but he usually hid it from me. Now he couldn't even though it had been less than a month.
He brought up baby talk every time I was in the room. The only time I could get peace was when he was asleep.
He was snoring softly beside me and every breath annoyed me more. I sat up and he mumbled something. I didn't respond and moved closer to the edge.
"Where are you going?" he asked a little more coherently.
"Getting a glass of water," I huffed.
I made my way downstairs and started a pot of coffee. I couldn't sleep anyway. After a while Hortense. She was carrying Della and a crying Donald. She tried to get a bottle together holding both of them.
"Need help," I said, taking Della.
"Do you mind?" she asked, offering me Della. "Usually Quackmore helps me."
"Not at all," I smiled.
Della was cute. She was sucking her thumb and cooed softly in her sleep. I didn't have a problem with her, just that she reminded me of what I could never have. I hadn't realized how long I had watched her until Scrooge's voice broke me from my thoughts.
"You look good as a mother," he whispered from behind me.
I shifted and looked around and Hortense was gone.
"I never thought about it," I lied.
"Why?" he hummed, brushing Della's hair out of her face.
"It wasn't for me," I whispered.
"I could see you with a mini you running around. Clinging to your leg on adventures. Just as ready to take on the danger that lay ahead." He was talking like he was imagining it for himself.
"That ship has sailed," I scoffed, handing him Della. I felt something break inside me seeing him holding her and staring at me. "Excuse me."
Before he could respond, I walked into the dining room. Hortense looked up at me. Donald had settled down now happily drinking his milk.
"I'm sorry. You both looked so content and Donny was fussing," she apologized. "Has anyone told you that you would be a good mom?"
I was holding back tears but nodded.
"Sorry I didn't mean to bring up a sore subject," she said.
"It just wasn't for me." I headed towards the exit and added, "I left her with the softy in the other room."
"Thank you," Hortense whispered.
I went upstairs and paced the length of the hall. I made a decision to leave a note and leave. I wanted to put as much space between me and Scrooge as possible. I could handle holding him back from having a family.
I tried my best to forget about that day for years. I almost had when I reached up to grab the Diamond of Dabblin when a smaller hand wrapped around mine from the other side of the mound.
"Who," I started to say then mid sentence asked, "Della?"
"How do you know my name?" She lowered into a defensive pose.
