"Tony. What the hell are you doing to this lab?" Pepper asked as you, along with her and Steve, his hand firmly holding yours, reassuring you.

"Wait, babe. It's almost..." He played around with some wires before grinning. "Got it."

A machine began to roar to life, being powered by the same reactor that had kept Tony alive.

"What is it?" you asked, staring at the intricate set of wires, cables and metal. It looked like it could fit a human, but it wasn't an iron man suit and it sure as heck wasn't something that looked movable. It was dead bolted to the ground and connected to billions of cables that ran to different power outlets.

He grinned. "That's the cool thing." He walked around to show it off with his arms outstretched to emphasise its grandeur. "Welcome to my time machine."

*****

"A time machine? You have to be kidding me," Steve said, looking incredulously at it. "This looks nothing like the one in that film - "

"This is based on actual science," Tony said, rolling his eyes. "Cap, you've been locked in ice for too long."

Steve's hand tightened on yours at the mention of ice. He said he was alright with it, but you knew it still haunted him. Hydra and ice and the tesseract. You rubbed his hand with your thumb, giving it a squeeze back too.

"How does it work?" you asked.

"As if you could understand," Tony mocked. "I am a genius. All you have to know is that it does work."

"And you know this how?" you asked.

"Do you wanna be the first to try it? With capsicle here?"

You grimaced at the word choice.

"Tony, don't be stupid," Pepper said.

"Oh come on. This isn't stupid. This is real."

"Tony..." she sighed.

You rolled your eyes and apparently so did Steve. "I'll test this thing out to prove you wrong," he said, clearly fed up with the name calling.

You raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"I'll go with you - "

"No. It'll be to risky. How do we even get back?"

Tony handed him what looked like a remote control. "Press it and you'll come back. And try not to change the future."

Steve rolled his eyes. "Alright."

"Enter as many dates as you want when you get in."

He got in and Tony pressed some buttons as he pressed some too, entering in a date you couldn't see. The machine began light up and soon a bright light had formed in the middle; a rip in the time line to travel to another time. You knew you didn't want him going back there alone. You looked to Tony before jumping.

*****

You woke up in the middle of a camp, Steve next to you. He looked at you in disbelief. "What are you doing here?!" he gasped.

"I wasn't going to just let you go on your own!" Suddenly a wave of nausea rushed through you and you found yourself vomiting. Steve did the same. You groaned. "I guess Stark didn't warn us about the side effects... Where are we anyways?"

Steve wiped his mouth. "1943, Italy."

1943... Before the ice...

"Why would you put that in?!" you asked.

He shook his head. "I didn't think it would actually work..."

"But why here?"

He sighed. Oh. You knew why. "Peggy," you said at the same time.

He looked at you, trying to apologise. "I'm so sorry - I just. One last time, I..."

You nodded. "Of course. No. I get it."

"Really?"

"You need to finally get over her, Steve... I get that. I just... Why couldn't you have done that in the present?"

He sighed, taking your hand. "Please... Don't hate me." He was on the verge of tears, his lower lip wobbling as he tried to contain the nostalgia and the emotions it brought along.

You shook your head. "Of course not... Can we go back please?"

He hesitated. Oh no. He wanted to stay.

Just as you were about to pounce on him for the remote, you heard, "Steve!"

You turned to the woman. She looked familiar. Peggy.
