Woo-Bin's eyes widened at my words, the weight of my past hitting him harder than he expected. His lips parted, but whatever he wanted to say got stuck in his throat. I could see the guilt, the sorrow, and the helplessness swirling in his gaze as he watched my unshed tears glisten under the dim streetlight.
"I'm sorry—"
"You don't have to apologize. That's just how life works."
Before I could say more, he pulled me into his arms. The warmth of his chest against my face, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, the deep scent of his cologne—it all wrapped around me like a cocoon. I hadn't realized how much I needed this. How something as simple as a hug could hold so much meaning.
I hesitated for only a second before my hands found their way around his shoulders, clinging onto him as if he was the only thing keeping me standing.
"I'm here now," he murmured into my hair. "I'll protect you."
My heart melted. He was trying to be my hero, making me feel like a princess in a world where I had only ever been my own knight. If only he knew what those words did to me.
If only he knew I never wanted to let go.
Later that night, as I lay in bed with a book in my hands, my phone screen lit up with an unexpected call. Seeing Yi-Jung's name flash across the screen made my brows furrow. He rarely called this late.
"Sora, where are you?" His voice slurred at the end, making me sit up immediately.
"Yi-Jung? Are you okay?" I asked, concern creeping into my tone. In the background, I could hear loud music and the indistinct chatter of people.
"Sora, I missed you," he groaned.
I sighed. He was drunk. And not just tipsy—completely out of it.
"Where are you?"
"Meskis Club," he mumbled.
My chest tightened. Meskis was an exclusive high-end club, a place where the rich and powerful drowned their sorrows in expensive liquor and fleeting company. It wasn't hard to guess why he was there.
I hung up and grabbed my cardigan, ignoring the cold as I rushed out with enough cash in hand. The club was as extravagant as I remembered, its flashing lights and deafening music making me feel out of place among the well-dressed elites. Eyes flickered toward me, scanning my simple outfit with mild disdain, but I ignored them. I had only one goal—to find Yi-Jung.
Pushing through the crowd, I scanned every inch of the place, even the men's bathroom, until—
"Yi-Jung!"
I spotted him on the ground, surrounded by a group of men. My breath hitched as one of them stomped on his hand, making him wince in pain.
I didn't think. I just ran.
Throwing myself over his beaten body, I shielded him with my own.
"Move!" one of the men barked. "I'm going to kill him!"
I shook my head firmly, refusing to budge. Their irritation was evident, but I wasn't afraid.
"Are you his girlfriend?" another man scoffed. "Do you even know what he did? He kissed my girl!"
My stomach twisted. I wanted to believe it wasn't true, but knowing Yi-Jung...
"Get off him!" I snapped. He was already battered and bruised—I couldn't let them hurt him anymore.
A sudden groan from the left caught my attention. The air in the room shifted.
There, standing in black with his men behind him, was Woo-Bin.
His expression was unreadable, but his eyes burned with fury. Without hesitation, his fist connected with the man's jaw, sending him stumbling back. Gasps echoed around us.
"You hurt the two most important people in my life," Woo-Bin said coldly. "Prepare for the consequences."
I was gently pulled to the side while Yi-Jung was rushed to the hospital. My eyes remained glued to Woo-Bin. The way he moved, so fast and precise, like he had memorized every weak point on the human body—it was terrifyingly mesmerizing.
And when it was over, when the last man hit the floor, I found myself lunging into his arms.
"Are you alright? Did they hurt you?" he asked, his hands firm on my shoulders as he scanned me for injuries.
I had been terrified—terrified for Yi-Jung, terrified for myself. For a moment, I thought we wouldn't make it. But then Woo-Bin showed up. Like he always did.
"I'm fine," I whispered. "But you're hurt..."
My fingers brushed against his swollen cheek and the small cut near his lip. Seeing him like this made my heart ache. First Yi-Jung, now him. These playboys were really trying to give me a heart attack.
"It's nothing," he dismissed, but I wasn't having it.
"Come with me. I'll take care of your wounds."
He was about to refuse, but the glare I shot him left no room for argument.
Woo-Bin sat on my couch, tapping his leg impatiently as I pulled out the medical kit. Normally, he had doctors for this, but tonight, he had me.
"Stay still. This might sting," I warned.
He chuckled. "So serious."
I carefully dabbed the cream onto his bruised cheek, trying to be as gentle as possible. His skin was warm under my fingertips.
After a moment of silence, he suddenly asked, "Aren't you afraid of me?"
I paused. "Why would I be?"
"You know what I am," he said, his voice quieter this time. "That I'm in the Mafia."
Most girls would run the other way. They'd be scared, cautious, unwilling to get involved with someone like him. But I wasn't like most girls.
I smiled softly. "There are things in life that don't scare me, Woo-Bin."
His eyes darkened slightly as he watched me put a small plaster over his cut. I hadn't realized how close we were until then—his breath fanned over my face, our noses nearly touching. My gaze flickered to his lips, and for a fleeting moment, I wondered—
"All done!" I blurted, pulling back before I did something reckless.
Woo-Bin coughed, rubbing the back of his neck as if to shake off whatever had just passed between us.
"I should go. You need to rest," he said, standing up. Before leaving, he reached out and gently patted the top of my head, a fond smile playing on his lips.
I watched him walk away, a feeling of regret settling in my chest.
Because the only thing I wished at that moment—
Was that I had kissed him.
