After a torturous two days of searching for Hailey and then waiting for hours on end in Chicago Med waiting room for news on her condition, Jay slowly started to lose hope on a positive outcome. He'd never give up on Hailey: his friend, his rock, his everything. She was a fighter and he knew that, but he also knew the world worked in a cruel way sometimes; especially towards the people who never deserve it.
"Hey, you heard anything?" Will asked, joining Jay in the waiting room once his shift was finished.
"Nope. Nothing. But....that means it's good, right?" Jay asked, silently pleading his older brother to give amazing news.
"It could mean anything, Jay. She's tough though, she'll be giving a good fight" Will assured Jay, laying a hand on his shoulder.
"Thanks for coming, but you should go home. You can't do anything" Jay said, feeling guilty for holding his shattered brother back.
"Don't be silly, Bro. I'm not going anywhere. I actually really care about Hailey, too" Over the last few months, Hailey and Will had become really close. She'd often hang out with the two brothers during the weekend and days off, her and Will clicking immediately. In Will's eyes, she was a little sister to him.
"Okay" Jay nodded, rubbing his hand across his fourhead.
Half an hour later, Doctor Marcel came out into the ED wearing a look that didn't strike as good news. "I've done what I can, but....but she's not going to make it through the night" Marcel broke, his heart breaking into pieces.
"Noooo" Jay cried, falling into his older brother's protective arms- who was equally a mess.
"I'm so sorry" Marcel said sincerely, wishing he could whip up a magic spell and fix Hailey.
"Why? Why Hailey?" Jay questioned, begging for it to make sense. The world was cruel, but this was beyond cruel.
"I don't know, Man" Will whispered.
"I wanna go see her" Jay said, wanting to see Hailey before he couldn't anymore.
"Ofcourse, follow me" Marcel nodded, guiding Jay to Hailey's room.
Inside the room, Hailey lay fast asleep. Her body drained of all energy and all signs of life. A fresh stream of tears rolled down Jay's face; he couldn't believe this was how this was it.
He sat down in a chair beside her sleeping body, taking hold of his best friend's hand and savoring the feeling of it. Jay wanted to remember it all. What it was like to hold her hand, the happiness her smile and laugh bought him on a daily basis, the way he felt so safe around her when he was sad."Hey, Hails" Jay said, stroking his thumb along the top of her hand. "I can't believe this is it. I'm gonna miss you, Partner....more than you'd ever know" Jay lost all control, tears spilled violently down his face.
"Mmm, Jay" A very week voice whispered, causing him to shoot his head up towards Hailey.
"Hails?" Jay ghasped in shock.
"Yeh, it's me" She tried to smile, forcing out a small one.
"You've go easy on yourself. This isn't you fault" Hailey said, her voice incredibly weak.
"I'm your partner, I should have been by your side" Jay shook his head, it was most definitely his fault in his eyes. "You saved my life, Hails, I couldn't even save yours in return"
"Jay, I'm alive right now. I won't make it out of here, but you've given me a few extra minutes" Hailey said, squeezing Jay's hand as tightly as she could.
"Hails....I...I love you"
"I love you, too, Jay. So much. You made me feel safe. The safest I've ever felt" Hailey retorted, tears flowing down both of their faces now.
"Please don't go. I need you, I want you" Jay begged, not able to even comprehend living a happy life without his happiness.
"You'll always have me, Jay" Hailey says, placing her hand over Jay's heart. "You'll be just fine. I'll always be here for you"
"Can...can I kiss you?" Jay asked, needing to feel Hailey's lips against his.
"Please" Hailey nodded, wanting the feeling just as much as Jay.
Jay leans forward, pouring all of his emotions into the kiss. Part of him hoping that maybe it would end like a Disney film; his kiss being the kiss of life. Reluctantly, Jay pulled away after a good half a minute, looking into Hailey's ocean blue eyes one last time; before she mumbled "I love you so much", and passing away peacefully.
A/N: Omg, this took me forever to right, simply because the fact that I've ended up in a blubbering mess every time I've attempted to finish it. I honestly don't think I've ever cried this badly writing a story😭😂. I'm so sorry for anyone who read this in a public space and ended up crying.
Also, I haven't proof read this, because I wouldn't be able to see through the tears- so sorry for any parts that aren't correct😂
Please comment and vote, it all helps so much and I'm truly grateful for it.
