"You only know you love her when you let her go"- Passenger.
Laying in bed on a freezing chicago evening, Jay felt warmth within him for for first time in a week. He was laughing uncontrollably with Hailey over face time, as she told him an unfortunate situation of her and OA both stacking it on ice at the same time. Being Hailey though, she over dramatised it to add more humour to it, making the entire laughing fit way harder and longer. Neither minded though, they found peace and music in each other's laughs.
"Oh my God, Hails! Why can't you do that in Chicago? I'dve payed to see you stack it" Jay wheezed, having barely any air left.
"Aw cheers, Jay. Nice to know you how much you really care about me" Hailey threw back, feigning being upset- however, both could so the mischievous twinkle in her ocean eyes.
The twinkle made Jay's heart flutter and stomach flip. Fluttering hearts and flipping stomachs had been a regular occurrence within Jay every time he messaged or called Hailey over the last week. He'd heard her laugh before face to face. He'd seen her smile before. He'd seen that same mischievous twinkle in her eyes numerous times before, however he'd never gotten flips of flutters. She seemed so much more beautiful and addictive over the screen.
"You know I care, I'd just find it very funny to see you stack it" Jay smirked, trying to play off the weird tingles without Hailey noticing.
"So kind of you"
"Anyway, you got any stories I need caught up on?" Hailey asked, changing over the conversation.
"Kim has a weird obsession with the Spice Girls" Jay answered after a second to think.
"What?" Hailey chuckled, definitely not seeing Kim as a Spice Girls fan.
And there is was, the flutters in Jay's heart and the flips in his stomach made another appearance.
"Oh yeh. Every time we're in the truck she puts their songs on. It's the worst, Hailey" Jay complained, seriously hating the popular girl band.
"Aw, no. I'm sure you'll survive Jay. It's only a few weeks of it. It can't be that bad" Hailey tried to be sympathetic, but she really couldn't manage it.
"It is" Jay huffed, a slight tint of trauma across his face.
"If you say so. You want me to tell Kim to quit it, because you're too much of a baby to handle it?" Hailey teased, finding it all too amusing.
"Haha, funny" Jay rolled his eyes.
"She said anything about the status of her and Adam though? They seemed to be closer when I left" Hailey questioned, hoping to God the two had got their act together.
"Ofcourse I played that card a couple times. Something has definitely happened between them since you left" Jay said.
"Omg, tell me!" Hailey ordered excitedly, needing the deets ASAP.
"Both her and Adam came in on Wednesday acting alot more perkier than usual. Kim also was yawning the entire day" Jay explained, his eye brow raising in a suggestive manner.
"OH MY GOD! YES!" Hailey cheered, throwing her arms up in the air and accidentally giving Jay a peek at her toned stomach.
This time he blushed and Hailey definitely noticed his emotions this time; I mean, it was impossible to not notice. He went from snow pale to beet red in a split second.
"Jay?" Hailey quietly called, seeing his head drifted somewhere else.
"Ugh, yeh, sorry. It's been a long day" Jay apologised, really trying not to stare at the Blond too hard.
"It's alright. I'll let you go sleep" Hailey smiled, fully aware that Jay's exuse was a flat out lie.
"No, it's okay. I'm happy staying like this if you are" Jay shook his head, wanting to keep hearing his best friends voice and seeing her face.
"Always" Hailey whispered. "However, you really do need to sleep. Kim isn't climatised to your tired grumpiness" Hailey laughed.
"That's mean. Stay over in New York as long as you want if you're going to be like that" Jay frowned.
"Oh please, you know you're already going crazy without me" Hailey joked.
"True, I do miss you alot" Jay admitted, taking the jokey conversation in a whole different direction.
"I miss you, too, Jay" Hailey retorted, blushing at her own confession and his.
"It's weird without you around. I didn't realise how used to you I got" Jay said, examining Hailey for any emotion other than stone cold with a tint of blush.
"I know. It's weird without you, too. I really wish I was back with you in Chicago. In a bar or my apartment, because yours is NOT even close to clean" Hailey dug, needing the joke to relief some of the heaviness.
"I'll bring you back to mine once you're back and I'll show you I can make it spick and span" Jay challenged, not thinking Hailey would go for it.
"Okay, deal. I'll buy you a Bartolies if you get it Hailey clean" Hailey promised.
"I thought I'M buying YOU one?" Jay questioned.
"You buy me one and I'll buy yours. That way you'll only have to pay for one pizza not two. Win win" Hailey shrugged.
"Okay. It's a date" Jay smiled, but panicking as soon as he realised what he said and tried to back paddle; much to Hailey's amusement.
"It's a date" Hailey repeated, her voice light but her face kind of serious.
"Hu?" Jay scoffed, shocked at Hailey's words.
"It's a date. You think I haven't noticed how you've been looking at me this entire call, and how you look at me at work?" Hailey stated matter of factly.
"Oh my God, I'm sorry. I...I, I don't know. I thought I hid it well" Jay stammered, completely mortified.
"It's okay. If I had an issue with it I would have said by now. Trust me" Hailey smiled, totally okay at Jay looking at her the way he did. Infact, she loved it.
"Yeh?" Jay checked.
"Yeh. So, it's a date?" Hailey said in a questioning tone.
"It's a date" Jay approved, exitment coursing through his body.
"Okay. Night, Jay" Hailey waved
"Night, Hails" Jay waved back with a smile, hanging up soon after.
Throwing his phone down on the bed next to him and flopping onto his back, the explanation to why his heart fluttered and stomach flipped hit him like a bus: He loved Hailey.
