A/N: This is after the episode where Jay and Hailey are having drinks and Adam shows up. Sometime in season 6, can't remember the exact episode though- sorry!

"I gotta ask" Adam spoke up, him and Hailey alone in the roll-in sorting out files.

"What?" Hailey asked, already nervous just by Adam's choice of words and tone.

"The other night. You didn't want me around, yet when I came round to make sure you were okay, Jay was there and looked like he had been for a while" It wasn't so much a questioned Adam asked, it was an implied question so he didn't actually have to say the question out loud.

"We're partners and really good friends, Adam. We were just doing our thing- it works" Hailey sighed, zoning in more on the file in her hand.

"I....why won't you let me be there for you? We fall asleep next to each other, we do more than just sleep" Adam asked, the frustration evident in his voice.

"I never asked Jay to come over. He just turned up. Like I said- it's the thing that works" Hailey tried keeping a neutral tone; she could sense a full blown row coming and she didn't want that at work.

"What the hell does that even mean?" Adam's voice was raised more than it previously was and he slammed down the file onto the desk; scaring Hailey.

"We talk- civilly. We listen to each other after a rough case, we talk to each other after a rough case" Hailey's voice is strong, trying to hide the anxuousness coursing through her body.

"DAMIT, HAILEY!" Adam yelled, losing his cool completely.

"WE'RE MORE THAN FRIENDS. I CAN MAKE YOU FEEL SAFE ALL NIGHT...BUT NO, YOU DON'T LET ME!" Hailey coiled up, fear threatening to over take her ability to keep emotionless.

"Jay and I have been friends alot longer than you and I have been sleeping together" Was all Hailey stated quietly, barely able to look Adam in the eyes.

"I CARE ABOUT YOU, HAILEY! WHEN WILL YOU GET THAT?" Adam shouted, his face bright red and a look in his eye that resembled a look she saw in her father's eyes growing up. Ofcourse Hailey knew Adam wouldn't lay a hand on her, but the fear was still there. Always would be there.

"Adam!" A deep, rough, voice stated from the door way- catching both officers attention.

When seeing who it was, Hailey's shoulders relaxed and the fear immediately subsided.

"It's okay, Jay" Hailey said softly, however, her eyes said otherwise.

"This isn't your business, Halstead" Adam glared.

"You're yelling at my partner, like hell it's my business. You don't shout like that. And if you knew Hailey properly, you'd know not to shout around her" Jay's voice was calm, too calm. The calmness was so calm it was threatening.

"You think I don't know her?" Adam scoffed, rubbing his hands through his hair; all whilst Hailey silently watched on as her boyfriend? and partner had a stand off over her.

"Well, you're yelling at her, so clearly not very well" Jay deadpanned, quickly glancing over to Hailey to see how how was.

"Stop arguing, please. Not here at work" Hailey pleaded, her voice confident but a little vulnerable still.

Adam inhaled deeply, trying to not yell again at either of them. So he chose the passive aggressive silent treatment instead; silently storming out the garage past Jay- making sure to shove him accidentally on his way past.

"Are you okay?" Jay turned his focus to Hailey straight away, running to where she was standing frozen almost.

"Ugh, yeh. Thankyou" Hailey feigned a smile- the tears swimming in her eyes saying to the contrary.

"Can I give you a hug, or will Kev come down and yell at me for being protective aswell?" Jay smirked, always knowing how to cheer Hailey up when she needs it- whilst also joking about what had caused the argument.

He'd listened to the whole thing.

"I don't know. Let's see" Hailey shrugged and smiled, letting a tear run down her cheek.

Chuckling, Jay pulled Hailey into his chest; holding her tightly in his arms.

"It wasn't your fault" Hailey muttered into Jay's chest. "I just don't think he can handle how much I trust you"

"Don't worry about it, Hails. Not now anyway" Jay whispered against the crown of Hailey's head.
