Cleaning out their apartment cupboards to get rid of junk and create more room for their soon-to-be-born daughter, Hailey found a picture of Jay with a little girl. Jay was dressed in his army gear and crouched down hugging a little girl- nine years old, maybe?- with a huge smile plastered across his face. Jay never talked much at all about his days in the army with Hailey. Occasionally he would say a little bit here and there whenever he had a night terror, but, usually, he was very close to the vest.

"Hey, Jay!" Hailey called out the bedroom.

"Yah?" Jay asked, quickly appearing in the bedroom.

"I've never seen this before. Can I ask you about it, or not?" Hailey was always careful with questioning Jay about his past. Most the time she never bought it up or asked about it; the ball was in Jay's Court with that topic, always.

Wandering to look closer at the picture in his wife's hand, the smile faded from his eyes seeing what picture Hailey held. "Ugh, just a little girl I spent a lot of time with"

"You seemed happy" Hailey whispered, leaning back against Jay's chest.

"Yeh, she was amazing" Jay nodded, sadness in his tone.

Even though Hailey could tell there was more to Jay's and the little girls relationship than just happiness by the tone of Jay's voice, she kept going. "What was her name?"

"Maryam. She was 8 years old"

"She's really pretty" Hailey complimented, tilting her head to look Jay in the eyes.

"Pretty, ridiculously smart, selfless" Jay sighed- a sigh of sadness.

Hailey didn't say anything, instead she placed the picture down ontop of the draws and turned around fully; wrapping her arms around Jay's middle. Jay returning the hug in seconds. "I love you" Hailey remined her amazing husband, kissing where his heart layed.

"I love you, too" Jay kissed the crown of her head, gulping back the tears that threatened him.

"You wanna talk more about it, or is this enough?"

"She was the girl" Jay stated, Hailey's heart sinking immediately.

Maryam was the girl he shot accidentally. The one that haunted him in his sleep, the one that sent him down the spiral, the one he watched die on the floor behind the door his gun shot through.

"I'm so sorry" Hailey hugged Jay tighter, there wasn't much more she could say than that.

"I was helping her when we weren't fighting. It was rare we weren't shooting, but when we weren't I always went to see her. I helped her with reading and maths- her parents couldn't do either" Jay explained, tears falling ontop of the blond hair beneath him- Hailey's tears dampening Jay's shirt.

"You gave her a chance; she would have been so greatful for that" Hailey attempted a smile, rising to kiss Jay on the lips.

"Yeh, I guess. I gave her a chance and took it from her" Jay sniffled, squeezing Hailey just that bit tighter.

"It was a complete accident. I'm sure she wouldn't be mad at you"

"She said something before she died to me, whilst she lay in my lap: eamiy - 'uhibuk" Jay said, a small light peering through the darkness in his eyes.

"What does that mean?" Hailey questioned.

"My Uncle- I love you" Jay chuckled lightly- tears of frustration at slight joy. He gave the little girl hope and love.

"She'll always be right here" Hailey spoke quietly but surely, placing her hand over Jay's heart.

"Yeh" Jay agreed, placing his hands over Hailey's hand.

A few days later

Snuggled up on the sofa in a fluffy blanket together, the couple scrolled through Google trying to find pretty names for their daughters middle name. They decided in weeks what her first name would be, they just hadn't thought of a middle one yet. They loved so many, but non of them felt right.

"You have any family members you were close to growing up- that were girls" Jay sighed, getting annoyed at how hard it was to chose a middle name.

"Ha, nope" Hailey scoffed, she was the only girl in her family besides her mum and grandma- neither "Evelyn" or "Marie" a favorite name of theirs.

"Me either" Jay groaned, throwing his head back.

"Any family members you have that you were close too?" Hailey retorted.

"Nope" Jay replied, popping the 'P' for emphasis.

That's when a light bulb struck Hailey. She thought of a name, however, it was risky. The intention was thoughtful, however, it may bring too many ghosts back for Jay.

"I can hear you thinking, Mrs Halstead" Jay smirked, tapping Hailey gently on the side of her head.

"I don't know" Hailey shrugged.

"Tell me, you can always tell me" Jay encouraged sweetly.

"What about 'Maryam'? It's just an idea, I don't wanna trigger anything. I just know she ment everything to you" Hailey rambled, slight regret coursing through her.

"Yeh?!" Enthusiasm and exitment? laced in his voice.

"It was just an idea" Hailey assured.

"Harper Maryam Halstead" Jay said out loud to see how it sounded.

"I absolutely love it. Do you?" Jay smiled.

"Yeh, I do!" Hailey smiled back.

"Can't wait to meet you, Miss. Harper Maryam Halstead. Daddy and Mommy love you so much" Jay coed to the baby pump, bending down and kissing it; Hailey chuckled lovingly at how adorable her husband was.

A/N: So, this was the most random one shot idea ever! I got the idea whilst picking out baby names for my Mum and Dad's baby daughter, lol. Anyway, hope you enjoyed this! Please comment below and vote if you think it deserves it.
