CHAPTER FORTY: CARINA'S DEATH

ZUES

It's been two weeks since Carina was missing. Ayaw kong sumuko. I am still hoping that she's fine and breathing.

Napailing ako at ininom ang tubig na hawak ko. Narito ako ngayon sa boat kasama ang mga coast guard at si Von. Suddenly one of the coast guard approach me and spoke. "Mr. Gonzales, it's been day fourteen of finding her but still we get nothing. Do you think finding her makes sense?" Tanong nito na ikinakuyom ng kamao ko. Nayupi ang hawak kong water bottle dahil sa pwersa ng paghawak ko dito.

Tumayo ako at pinantayan ito. "You're saying that she's dead?" Pagalit kong tanong.

Umiling ito. "N-no, Mr. Gonzales. Its not what I meant." Nakayuko na nitong sagot.

"Kung hindi iyon ang pinupunto mo, eh ano? Tell me!" Sigaw ko rito kaya lalo itong yumuko sa harapan ko.

Biglang hinawakan ni Von ang balikat ko habang umiiling. "Tama na yan, Zues. Be calm. Mahahanap rin natin si Carina." He said then smiled. Bumaling naman ito sa coast guard na kausap ko kanina. "Paandarin mo na ang boat. Maghahanap ulit tayo. We will roam all the islands in the Philippines." Utos nito at sumunod naman ang coast guard.

"We will not stop until we found her! That's an order!" Utos ko sa kanila kaya tumango sila.

Agad nilang pinaandar ang boat at sinimulang maghanap. I also did the same.

Lumipas ang mga oras hangang sa gumabi ay wala pa rin kaming nakikitang Carina. Just like the other days, we land to the shore without Carina.

Napaupo ako sa buhangin habang tinitingnan ang karagatan. Payapa ito. Where are you, Carina? Bakit hanggang ngayon ay di pa rin kita nakikita? I almost roam all the islands in the Philippines but still you're not here beside me. If I need to roam all the island in the world just to see you then I will do it. I will not be tired of finding you Carina. If I lost you, I lost myself too. So please return to me baby, safe and sound.

Lumapit sa pwesto ko si Von at umupo sa tabi ko. "I know your tired, Zues. Rest now. Get some sleep. Tomorrow will be another fight in finding her." Von spoke while staring at the sea.

"I don't know what to do, Von. Until now, she's still missing. I couldn't find her. Ginagawa ko naman ang lahat pero bakit ganito? Bakit hindi ko pa rin siya makita?" I asked before drinking the can of beer I am holding.

"Cheer up, buddy. Makikita rin natin si Carina. She's alive. Don't make negative assumptions. For now, lets go home and get rest. Tomorrow will be another long day." He answered while patting my shoulder.

Tama siya. Kailangan kong magpahinga at magkaroon ng lakas para maghanap ulit kay Carina bukas.

Tumayo ako at nagpagpag. Magkasabay kami ni Von na pumunta sa kanya-kanya naming mga kotse. Von pat again my shoulder before entering his own car and I just gave him a weak smile. I am thankful that Von stayed by my side right. He didn't leave me like a true friend does. He comforted me like I'm his brother. Besides, I owed my life to him. Don't worry Von, someday I will return all the good things you did to me.

It's was past three in the morning when my phone rang. I immediately get my phone and answer it. "Hello? Zues Gonzales speaking." Wika ko sa namamaos na boses. Kagagaling ko lang kasi sa pagtulog and last night I cried and prayed just like the other nights without her.

"Z-zues, they found Carina." I heard Von's voice answered on the other line.

Agad akong napabangon sa kinahihigaan ko dahil sa gulat, saya at pananabik. "R-really? I'll be there right away. Nasa hospital ba siya?" I asked. I get up to my bed and find clothes to use.
