Tessa

“Right,” Liv says, taking charge, “We have three hours to get the three of us presentable for a date.” I sit with Ella on the couch, listening to Liv closely. Ella looks positively scared by the idea of Liv being in charge. But she hasn’t seen Liv with a makeup set and a wardrobe of old clothes.

Yes, that situation was me a few years back. I think I was in primary school with Liv for a school disco, and I had no clothes suitable. When Liv came over, she sorted out my wardrobe for me, and I ended up winning best dressed girl of the night. All credit went to Liv, of course.

“Tessa?” Liv asks, “Tessa, are you listening?”

“Yes!” I reply quickly.

“What did I just say?” Liv looks at me.

“Um…”

“Exactly,” Liv sighs, “I was saying about how we have to find nice dresses and skirts or whatever and borrow things off each other.”

“Like I needed to be told that.” I pull a face at her. Liv rolls her eyes. Ella laughs.

“Ok, I’ll meet you two back here in ten minutes. I’m going to get my clothes and makeup.” Liv tells us, and then she heads off. Three hours.

I root through my wardrobe, pulling out random clothes and throwing them onto my bed.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Liv skids into the room, “I leave for ten minutes and it looks like a bomb site!”

“I don’t care,” I reply, “It’s better than my room at home.”

“Actually,” Liv grins, sitting down, “Your Mum’s been cleaning up your room since I was last there. She said she found three half eaten bars of chocolate under your bed, and loads of dirty socks…”

“Why would the chocolate bars be half eaten?” I wonder out loud.

“That’s not the point!” Liv exclaims, “You live in this room with Ella! What does she think about it?”

“This is better than my room at home too,” Ella shrugs, “It doesn’t bother me.”

“Yeah, she spends most of her time in Dan’s room anyway.” I shrug at Liv.

“There’s something funny with Dan,” Ella mutters.

“Here she goes again,” I whisper under my breath. Ella doesn’t seem to hear me, or if she does, she keeps it quiet.

“What’s wrong with Dan?” Liv asks her.

“He’s just…different…” Ella sighs, “I get the feeling that he doesn’t like me anymore.”

“Well that’s just rubbish.” Liv announces.

“He’s invited you on this date,” I point out, “And he wouldn’t do that if he didn’t like you.” Liv nods in agreement. Ella smiles.

“Thanks guys,” She whispers. We smile at her.

“That’s what friends are for,” I say.

“And we have…fifteen minutes to spare!” I say triumphantly, smiling at my two best friends. I look at them and then at myself. I feel…underdressed compared to them.

Ella is wearing a shiny silver skirt, a pink top and a white shrug with white pumps. She’s straightened her hair and tucked it back with a pink flower hairclip. With light pink lip gloss and pink nails, she looks amazing.

Liv is wearing a halter neck polka dot dress with a black shrug and black ballerina pumps. She’s plaited her hair to the side and has curled the stray strands of hair.
