Lizzie's POV
"You okay?" I leaned over to whisper in Alexis's ear. We were currently in the living room on the couch of my friend, Madeline's house. Tonight was the first friends family dinner we've had in a while, it was mainly to celebrate my move back and catch up. Everyone was pretty exited to meet Alexis again but I could tell it was getting to be a bit much. I mean yes they know her but similar to the twins, she doesn't know them.
Alexis nodded in returned but continued to lean into my side as she took my hand in her, playing with the sleeve of my sweater. This has been a good week for us, it was a lot of new but she's been a lot more open with me. She started school on Monday online. She only has to meet on Skype three days a week and the rest of the time is independent study which she thrives in, I swear she might be a secret genius because she works through school stuff with such ease. On Tuesday, she also started therapy. She goes twice a week and so far for her first two sessions were successful. Although they haven't discussed any of the big things, I'm optimistic. I'm still surprised by how easily she agreed, because for me asking her was nerve wracking.
"Alexis, do you remember in New York when we were talking that night you had that scary nightmare? And I said that I'd help you figure things out?"
"Yeah?" She answered giving me an uneasy look.
"Well I was thinking you could start therapy next week? Like talk to someone who's a professional and can help you more than I do?"
"What do you mean? Why do I need therapy?"
"Well I was just thinking that I don't feel like I'm doing enough or am prepared to help you work through some of the bigger things. So I thought maybe seeing a professional might help?"
"A professional?"
"Yeah, they can really help you."
"How would they help me though? It's not like they can change anything now?"
"You're right, I really wish I could change things and get rid of your nightmares and pain, but I can't. They can't change things either but they can help you process and work through the hurt and the nightmares."
"But I don't get how they would help me with that? I try really hard not to think about that stuff but it doesn't work," she admitted sadly.
"Well you know I go to therapy too. And in my therapy sessions, we just talk about whatever I want to. Sometimes we play games or color or draw pictures but mainly it's just talking."
"What do you talk about?"
"Whatever's on my mind. Like last time I talked about you and how cute you were when you were sick."
"Why?" she stared at me confused but also kind of embarrassed.
"Because I wanted to tell her about it, and you are cute when you're sick," I replied easily, not wanting to go into detail about how much she scared me with her breakdown or possible need to visit the hospital.
"Oh, what would I have to talk about?"
"Whatever you want, you can tell her about anything and anything you talk about with them stays between her and you."
"But what about you?"
"Hmm?"
"You won't even know what I tell her?"
"I won't know unless you want to tell me."
"O-kay."
"So I was thinking you could meet this nice therapist next week?"
