I nervously stood up as I twiddled my fingers. "I-I'm um my name is Alexis and I..."
Alexis's POV
".....I moved here recently with my uh my- with my...Sorry, I uh I'm new," I shakily stuttered as I cursed myself internally. I heard a few laughs erupt around me as they tried to hide them but failed. The worst sound was the silence, no one cared that I was there. On TV they always show how happy a class is to have someone new, but here, one was glad. Heck, I wasn't even that happy to be here. I just felt so out of place.
"Why don't you tell us your favorite book? And maybe how old you are?"
"Okay, um I'm eleven, I don't have a favorite book but I do like reading. It's one of my favorite pastimes," I answered as I anxiously scratched the back of my hand. There was another dead silence before Mr. Wilson spoke up.
"Thank you, Alexis, it's great to have you here, right class?"
A series of yeahs and awkward smiles spread across the room as I hesitantly scanned the room. Mr. Wilson turned towards his desk to get something before noticing me. "You may sit down now, Ms. Olsen," he gestured to me and I nodded, embarrassed of my behavior and everything else that had just taken place in the last three minutes.
"I mean this in the nicest way possible but I have a feeling that you aren't looking for a career in show business like your 'kind of 'mom?" Lily loudly whispered beside me. I just shook my head no as I tried to hide my face in my hands.
"Pastime? C'mon, you've got to be smarter than that?" Lily started to tease me as I shrunk in my seat. Day one is not going well. I just ignored her not sure how I should interpret her teasing if it was in a mean way or a nice way.
The lesson continued and I tried my best to focus but I ended up zoning out practically the whole time. English was supposed to be my easy class but all I could think about was if people were looking at me, whispering about me, laughing at me, teasing me behind my back. I felt so out of place and angry at myself even. Why did I say pastime? Why was I shaking so much in front of everyone? Am I an old lady? People must hate me already.
I left as quickly as possible once class was over. I watched from the side of the hallway for a little while before I noticed that everyone was grabbing their lunches, it was lunchtime.
I didn't want to go. I miss Sebastian, he always had lunch with me. We'd talk or not and it was just so perfect and calm. I miss my calm, but mostly I miss my Lizzie. This place isn't horrible but it also isn't great. How do I get her to change that one-week thing to a one-day thing?
I reluctantly followed my feet to my locker and struggled to open the stupid thing for a good few minutes before a random boy appeared next to me.
"Hey, need some help?" He asked carefully as I shuffled away from him. What happened to personal bubbles?
I observed his behavior like a hawk just waiting for something bad to happen.
"Sorry I meant to introduce myself, I'm Jake. My locker is just a few down from yours. You looked like you were struggling so I thought I'd ask," he added on.
"Sure, I'm Alexis," I answered with a cautious look.
"These damn things always get stuck," he chuckled hitting my locker a few times.
